Residents in Chicago and several other states were shocked when Xfinity’s internet service went down on Nov. 9, 2021. Fortunately, Xfinity/Comcast was able to solve the problem not long after the outage started.
This did not stop its customers from flooding Twitter to post about the outages. It seemed that the first few outages started at 7 a.m. CT. However, by 8:30 a.m., the majority of customers reported having internet service again across the country.
Xfinity themselves took to Twitter about the situation, acknowledging that their customers were dealing with service and network issues. “Our teams are actively working to bring impacted customers back online, as we continue to investigate. We apologize to those who have been affected.”
Around 50,000 internet outages in Milwaukee, Detroit, New York, New Jersey, and many other areas between the east and west coasts were reported, according to the website Downdetector.
This is not the first-time Comcast has had a mass internet outage. The same thing happened on at least two other occasions. Comcast had an outage in 2016, with services being down for four hours nationwide. In 2018, the cause for its second outage was due to two cut fiber-optic lines, which only affected the United States.
Cellphones were also affected in Chicago. Alderman Andre Vasquez’s office stated that 40th ward residents and office employees had to communicate through email.
But even if cellphones also dealt with the outage, Office of Emergency Management and Communications Spokesperson Mary May notified citizens that 911 and 311 services in Chicago were not affected.
