Details of the Shooting
During this time it has been many situations as far as violence going on in Chicago. Recently, there was a shooting that happened at 3:36 P.M. at 1253 West Thorndale Avenue, between Lakewood and Magnolia avenues. These three teens were just leaving school. This is truly tragic because you shouldn’t be leaving school, worrying about if you’re going to be alive or not.
On Jan. 31, 2024, three African American teens were shot after attending a full day of school. Only being a couple of blocks away from Senn High School. One of the victims being 16-year-old, Daven Gibson. He was rushed to St. Francis Hospital with a wound to the chest. There, Gibson was pronounced dead while receiving care at the hospital. The other two students being at the Illinois Masonic Hospital. One is still currently in critical condition and the other is stable. According to bystanders, fellow attendees were trying everything to help the young boys. Even going as far as performing CPR.

With the loss of one of the students, I can only imagine the hurt of his family. No one would want to receive the call that they’ve lost a family member, especially a 16-year old young man. A similar situation happened five days before with two young men.
The young men were leaving school to have an off campus lunch at around 12:25 p.m. Six students were exiting Innovations High School, when two vehicles – a dark-colored sedan and a sport-utility vehicle – pulled up along Wabash Avenue letting off shots towards the students. Why are so many children enduring such brute violence?
The Need for Change
As a youth in Chicago, I know that we young people, never know when our last day of living on this earth is. The amount of violence that goes on is truly heartbreaking and needs a resolution immediately. We need better. There doesn’t need to be more families grieving over the loss of a member taken before they’ve had a chance to live.
