Why Was There a Broad Drop-Off in Democratic Turnout in 2024?
There are several causes for the drop-off. For starters, following the high attendance in 2020—which was made possible by modifications to the epidemic rules that boosted mail voting—some reversal might be anticipated.According to some experts, Ms. Harris was just the most recent political casualty of a post-pandemic worldwide trend that favors challengers regardless of the political stance of the incumbents in countries like Britain, South Africa, South Korea, and Japan.
However, limited outcomes in battleground states suggest that Democrats had a chance to rebuff Mr. Trump once more. After replacing Mr. Biden, whose popularity has plummeted since his 2020 victory, several party officials claimed that Ms. Harris did not have enough time to completely revamp the campaign.
Others were more critical of her messaging, arguing that by running alongside conservatives like Liz Cheney and discussing risks to democracy. The campaign was attempting to win over Republican crossover votes by chasing ghosts. According to these individuals, the Harris campaign ought to have focused more on discussing how her economic policies will impact a significant but disgruntled segment of her party.
Structural Distinctions
It’s also possible that structural distinctions between the Democratic and Republican operations contributed. With plenty of money, the Harris campaign used a conventional turnout strategy that placed field staff in campaign offices located throughout the battlefield map. The National Committe
Former Democratic National Committee chairperson Donna Brazile stated, “It’s really a question of playbooks.” At rallies, on podcasts, and in other appearances, Trump consistently conveyed his more robust and edgy content. Democrats attempted to compete in seven states that were considered battlegrounds and then stop there.
The five counties with the highest number of registered Democrats—Allegheny, Delaware, Lackawanna . Montgomery, and Philadelphia—were an unexpected source of support for Mr. Trump’s triumph in Pennsylvania, the state with the largest electoral reward on the battlefield map.
Though not by the necessary margins to defeat Republican-leaning regions of the state, Ms. Harris did win these counties. In all five Democratic strongholds, the overall turnout was lower than in 2020. Which may help to explain why Ms. Harris won 78,000 fewer votes than Mr. Biden. Mr. Trump increased his total number of votes in these same counties by 24,000.
