For Chicagoans seeking some nighttime excitement the evening before Independence Day they only need to look to the sky. The city is planning an explosive fireworks display on Saturday, July 3, 2021. According to local officials, the pyrotechnics display will be noticeable from Grand Avenue all the way south to 67th Street along the lakefront.
“Putting on a grandiose fireworks display to celebrate both our city’s reopening and Independence Day is an excellent way to kick off the summer we’ve all been waiting for,” said Mayor Lori Lightfoot. She also stated that the fireworks “will be shot higher than usual.”
Locals looking to the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) to ferry themselves to the lakefront for the display are in luck. CTA has added additional bus service and full train service for Saturday.
CTA has expanded service on Saturday for the bus routes listed below:
#3 King Drive
#4 Cottage Grove
#29 State
#65 Grand
#66 Chicago
#124 Navy Pier
#147 Outer Drive Express
#151 Sheridan
On Independence Day July 4, 2021, and the following day July 5, 2021, CTA busses and trains will be following a holiday schedule, so plan accordingly. Despite the city’s reopening, face coverings are still mandatory on all bus and train lines.
Saturday evening will be a comfortable time to watch the fireworks as the temperatures are expected to be in the 70s and the humidity being low to moderate. The weather will be perfect to bring along a picnic blanket and some nighttime snacks to enjoy the display.
The fireworks are expected to start at 9:30 p.m. This will be a great treat as this is the second year the fireworks at Navy Pier are not being held.
