Burglars have managed to steal an entire ATM from a Chicago business after failing a few other times at other locations. According to the city’s local Fox News outlet’s report on Sept. 4, 2021, the Chicago Police Department stated that the burglars attempted to use a blow torch and pry tools to open one ATM outside a local business.
Officials further stated the suspects also smashed a door or window trying to steal the ATM in two other robberies. The thieves managed to steal an automated teller machine from one local business.
All of the burglaries happened in the city’s Jefferson Park area. The first incident occurred on August 29 at 12:46 a.m. at 5300 Block North Elston Avenue. The next one occurred at the 5300 Block North Milwaukee Avenue on September 1 around 1:39 a.m. The last incident also happened on September 1, only at 5300 Block West Gale Street at 1:50 a.m.
After news about the burglaries broke on social media a few people had some things to say about them. Jeanene Fortin tweeted, “I guess some muscle power ~ that’s about it. Banks should put these ATM machines in a brick wall, make them flush so no amount of prying can loosen it. Smh ~.”
Another person — Levora J — commented on Fox 32 Chicago’s tweet, “This sounds like the standalone ATMs that the business buys. They usually don’t have a lot of money in them.” BE. Barry’s Twitter comment said, “Where are the security cameras with silent alarms? Are banks so cheap they won’t hire their own security?”
Currently, it is unclear whether or not the Chicago Police Department has any video surveillance of the burglaries. These crimes are still being investigated. Officials have asked the public to call (312) 746-7394 if they have any information about the incidents.
