One of the most anticipated sci-fi films, “Dune,” is coming to theaters and HBO Max concurrently. The film is a 2021 American epic-science fiction adaptation of the 1984 original.

The movie was set in the far future of humanity when Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) accepts the supervision of Arrakis, a dangerous desert planet, also known as “Dune.”

Although the opportunity is an intricate trap, Leto moved his concubine Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) and young son Paul scion and heir, with his most trusted advisors from Caladan to Arrakis, the wealthiest and most important planet. Leto took charge of the spice mining operation and faced the dangers of giant sandworms.

The story follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his family, the noble House of Atreides, as they battle the dangerous desert planet between the native Fremen and the invaders, the House of Harkonnen. “Dune” is the only source of melange known as “spice,” a drug that is the most valuable commodity in the universe because it extends human life and provides superhuman levels of thought and vital space travel.

Paul Atreides’ heritage of control over Arrakis brought them into conflict with its former overlords, House Harkonnen. Paul was the messianic figure Kwisatz Haderach expected by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood.

He is a gifted and brilliant man trained by his father’s men, and his mother’s instinct was born into a great destiny beyond his understanding. His travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe will ensure the future of his family and the noble House of Atreides.

When the evil forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of “spice,” their survival will depend on their ability to conquer their fear. An act of treachery and betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to the natives of Arrakis. He lived with the Fremen people in the deep desert to learn their ways and discover his destiny.

Half of the film centers on family drama to politics and turbulent relations with the Fremen, which takes away from the excitement and mystery of the story. Instead, it descends into stereotype dialogues about courage, strength, and honor familiar in the superhero and sci-fi genres. The mediocre quality of writing and performance of varying casts disappoint the tension, majestic heroism, and mortal dangers. While the movie has too much action, it doesn’t have enough heart to deliver the ecological, anti-colonialist spirit of the original novel.

“Dune” is the first of the two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name. The film stars an ensemble cast also includes Zendaya as Chani, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Oscar Isaac as Leto Atreides, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, and more.
