Judge Delays Release of Arrest Videos in Tyre Nichols Case
Further video of the Tyre Nichols incident has been delayed due to a challenge brought by one of the officers accused in Tyre Nichols’ death. The delay was verified by Allison Fouche, a representative for the Memphis mayor’s office. At a council meeting, Jennifer Sink, the city’s chief legal officer, had disclosed that authorities intended to release additional 20 hours of audio and video footage pertaining to the January police beating of Nichols. Hours before the scheduled release, a court ordered a postponement.
On January 7, 2022, authorities pulled over Tyre Nichols in Memphis’ Hickory Hill neighborhood on allegations of reckless driving, which authorities say they have been unable to substantiate. Footage later released contradicted the officers’ version of events. In a short time, this sparked protests against police brutality in Memphis and beyond. Furthermore, the footage shows officers punching, tasing, and kicking Nichols, who tragically died three days after the brutal beatdown.
What Was in the Unreleased Footage?
The audio on the video, which captures comments made both after the beating and after an ambulance transported Nichols to the hospital, was discovered by Steven Mulroy. He also made a suggestion that the video might be taken into account when additional charges are being considered.
The department fired another police officer for their part in the fatal altercation. She stated. the dismissal of seven of the 13 Memphis police officers whose involvement was looked into after the incident.
A judge ruled that the release must be postponed “until such a time as the state and the defendants have reviewed this information.” hours before it was scheduled to happen. An attorney for one of the since-fired police officers who participated in Nichols’ violent arrest, Desmond Mills, Blake Ballin filed a motion, and the court granted his request.
The city intended to hold off on releasing the video until after the internal investigation was over. The Department of Justice also said that it had begun its own investigation into the use of force by the Memphis Police Department. As well as a different investigation of specialized police units across the country.
What’s Next?
All five of the cops accused in Nichols’ killing were members of the SCORPION squad, which has since been disbanded. This team was initially created to combat crime, auto theft, and gang activities in the city. The release has been postponed indefinitely by the judge’s ruling. In response, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office stated that it agreed with the judge’s judgment.
“Regarding other material planned for release, our office needs to review it carefully to ensure it doesn’t prejudice the defendant or jeopardize our prosecution,” the office said. “We know the judge has the final say in this matter and trust that the appropriate decision has been made to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. We will work to review the material promptly in the hopes that the majority of it will be released sooner rather than later.
A challenge filed by one of the officers charged in Tyre Nichols’ death has delayed additional footage of the incident. The unreleased footage contains audio that could put into motion additional charges. The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office supported the judge’s decision to delay the release.
The Department of Justice has launched its own investigation into the Memphis Police Department’s use of force, level of supervision, and specialized police units nationwide.
