A virus called norovirus that causes vomiting and diarrhea is extremely contagious. Anyone can contract norovirus and become ill. People can contract the virus by inadvertently ingesting minor amounts of vomit or feces from an infected person. Additionally, they can contract the virus by making direct contact with a person who has the norovirus, such as by giving them care, sharing meals, or using the same eating utensils as them.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
The majority of persons who contract norovirus experience a severe disease that lasts one to two days, while others may remain sick or experience symptoms for up to six days. The body gradually gets rid of the entire virus after the disease has passed. The norovirus is not known to leave a person in a long-term “carrier” state.
Additionally, norovirus can live on surfaces for up to four weeks. It is important to clean regularly. For items or surfaces touched frequently, clean them every day.
HOW CONTAGIOUS IS IT?
The norovirus spreads quickly. Individuals can easily spread the norovirus to others if they have the illness. The virus is abundantly present in an infected person’s stool and vomit. The number of norovirus particles that can make a person unhealthy is as low as 18, and there are nearly five billion of them in one gram (or about 14 teaspoons) of stool.
Moreover, from the start of the sickness until a few days after they feel well, people are most contagious. Some people may continue to be contagious for weeks after feeling better. This is because even when people feel better, their body is constantly working to get rid of the infection.
KNOWING YOU HAVE NOROVIRUS
To add, a doctor could take a stool sample from those ill for testing if they suspect someone may have a norovirus infection. People might not need to be tested if they live in an environment where others have tested positive for the norovirus, such as an assisted living home or long-term care facility. A doctor may make a diagnosis based on what is going on in the facility if someone has comparable symptoms.
Therefore, common symptoms of norovirus infection include vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramping.
NOROVIRUS SYMPTOMS AND OTHER
- Diarrhea.
- Vomiting.
- Nausea.
- Stomach pain.
Other symptoms may include:
- Fever.

Richard Ellis (FLICKR CC0) - Headaches.
- Body aches.
Additionally, intestinal or stomach irritation is brought on by norovirus. People refer to this as acute gastroenteritis. Gastroenteritis is an intestinal infection characterized by fever, nausea, vomiting, cramps, and diarrhea. Typically, the spread of stomach flu occurs by contact with an infected person, tainted food, or contaminated water.
TREATMENTS AND PROCEDURES TO CURE
It is beneficial to consume fluids that can replenish the body’s electrolytes, which are quickly lost during vomiting and diarrhea.
Besides, people’s bodies contain electrolytes, which are vital to the normal functioning of our muscles and neurons.
As a result, in healthy adults, norovirus often causes a brief sickness with symptoms that last just a few days. Dehydration, on the other hand, can be a frequent problem in young children and the elderly.
Also, these populations are susceptible to severe dehydration, which may necessitate hospitalization for treatment with intravenous fluids (intravenous or IV fluids). People don’t usually need to get medical advice unless there’s a risk of a more serious problem. To help ease their own or their child’s symptoms drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
To conclude, to prevent getting this virus:
- Practice proper hand hygiene.
- Wash fruits and vegetables and cook seafood thoroughly.
- When people are sick, do not prepare food or care for others.
- Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces.
- Wash laundry thoroughly.
