April holds a lot of national and international awarenesses. One of which is Celebrate Diversity Month. In 2004 an initiation was started to recognize and honor the diversity of the world. Embracing everyone’s differences, whether it’s race, gender, faith, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or other factors, honors the common essence of humanity.
Celebrate Diversity Month Establishes a Deeper Understanding
Developing a deeper understanding of others, regardless of what they are, how they live, or who they are, allows people to appreciate everyone’s similarities and differences. Celebrate Diversity Month allows academic fields and workplaces the opportunity to increase diversity in their facilities. There have been numerous scholarships aimed at addressing this issue.
The campaign for Celebrate Diversity Month was started by two American diversity consulting firms, Diversity Best Practices and ProGroup Inc. They were driven by the goal to address the growing multiculturalism taking place in global societies. Celebrate Diversity Month highlights the urgency needed in understanding other cultures. Doing so ensures a better world.
Diversity is essential because it can benefit everyone in all aspects of life. It humbles people and opens them to the knowledge that the world doesn’t revolve around one belief.
Inclusion in the Workforce
Celebrating diversity in the workforce is important. It establishes an inclusion of different ideas and perspectives when making decisions. Embracing diversity in the workforce also nurtures employees to develop stronger interpersonal skills that can be beneficial to them both in and out of the office.
Socializing with various cultures, lifestyles, and perspectives can help open people’s eyes to how the world works. It allows people to not be blinded by what “norms” they have been raised in and opens their horizons to new ideas and thoughts.
Refusing to appreciate and accept others’ differences is the root of all the world’s problems. There are many things that people and employers can do to Celebrate Diversity Month.
Ways to Celebrate
To enhance inclusion schools and workplaces can designate certain months as nationally recognized history and heritage months. For example:
- February: Black History Month.
- March: Women’s History Month.
- April: Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month or Celebrate Diversity Month. It is also Arab American Heritage Month.
- May: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. It is also Mental Health Awareness Month and Jewish American Heritage Month.
- June: LGBTQ+ Pride Month.
- September: Latinx Heritage Month.
- November: Native American Heritage Month
They can also hold special events or parties to celebrate their appreciation towards their students or employees. For instance, they could host a meal for employees to discuss ways to create a safe space at work in addition to being better allies. This can be a serious topic to talk about, however, conversations held over a meal can help keep the mood light.
Celebrate Diversity All-Around
People can Celebrate Diversity Month at home too. They could listen to different genres of music, try cuisines from different cultures, or watch documentaries about different cultures. For those who enjoy reading, they have thousands of books on all of the different cultures in the world.
Opening one’s eyes to the differences that make everybody unique is a way to Celebrate Diversity Month. If everyone looked and acted the same then the world would be boring and bland. As a whole, diversity completes the world by adding different sounds, colors, thoughts, and ideas.
