I’m Richard Simmons, Fitness Expert
Richard Simmons is a household name. When many think of the eccentric fitness instructor, they think; of a leotard, short shorts, wild curly hair, and exercise. He was raised in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Simmons regularly states how he had been very overweight since he was as young as four or five. His heavyweight would follow him into adulthood.
His move to Los Angeles in the 1970s kick-started his desire to lose weight and establish his gyms. After opening multiple gym locations, he opened his gym studio called “The Anatomy Asylum,” which he later renamed “Slimmons.” The studio remained until 2016 when he taught classes. Rising to fame in the 1980s and grew a following of tens of thousands for his fun and fresh take on exercise through dance aerobics.
Through the years, he would deliver exercise teachings through his studios, DVDs, cassettes, and books. His fitness career led him to even more media avenues. His career gained so much traction that he’d find himself making cameos in multiple movies and tv shows such as his recurring role on ‘General Hospital’. However, being in the public eye leads to judgment and rumors.
Scrutiny and Speculation
Richard has been questioned throughout his career about his sexuality. All due to his avant-garde style consisting of bright colors, rhinestones, and makeup, his bubbly, bright personality, and his private romantic life. However, he has never felt compelled to divulge his sexuality to the public.
In a 2012 “Men’s Heath” article, the interviewer supposed about his sexuality because of his wardrobe he replied, “When the king gets depressed, he doesn’t call for his wife or the cook. He turns to the little man with the pointed hat and says to the court jester ‘make me laugh.’ And I am that court jester.”
Even rumors circulated from The National Enquirer that Richard was undergoing a sex change. A shocking claim that his publicist denied.
Not only was Simmons the victim of public accusation, but he also felt it from those close to him. His former assistant Mauro Oliveira accused Simmons’ housekeeper of holding him hostage. The claims came after the fitness coach had been missing from the public eye. In 2014, Richard Simmons stepped away from his public image, secluding himself. This caused fans to worry about the star’s mental and physical well-being. Richard discredited the hostage claims in two different phone interviews.
Even one health speculation stated he had a birth defect in his foot. In a TMZ 2022 documentary, the claim was made, even though there is no real evidence to prove this. Though the only publicly revealed health complications were a bad knee and indigestion, which he was hospitalized for. During this instance, he was seen with a blanket covering him from paparazzi and reporters. While his live-in housekeeper, Teresa Reveles, walked him to his car.
Where is He Now
Richard’s disappearance from the public eye was truly one of the most unexpected celebrity disappearances. Though Simmons has decided to step back from the limelight, he still is very much caring and appreciative of his fans. This past July 12, Richard celebrated his 75th birthday.
Though he didn’t make any public appearances for it, he did inform the public about his feelings about it through his publicist. His publicist Tom Estey stated, “This is a big milestone. I just want to see him happy, which he is.”
While Simmons seems to be enjoying this new landmark, so do his fans! On his special day, paparazzi were able to catch photos of two fans outside his residency. Where they held balloons and a sign that said “Happy Birthday Richard We Love You!”
Though they most likely didn’t get to see the elusive fitness instructor, they still aimed to show their appreciation for him. This is an example of how Richard Simmons truly did make a mark on this world as a fun, eccentric fitness instructor.
