The Summer is almost over but that doesn’t mean Chicago is safe from the heat. Multiple sources say that within the next week, the city shall be under a near 100 degree heat wave. What this means is that it will not be safe for vulnerable portions of Chicago’s population. This would include those without housing and elders. The city likes to be a little silly sometimes and give its people extremely high temperatures after having extreme rain a few weeks ago.
Heat Preparation
Regardless, what matter most is that Chicagoans prepare for this intense heat. There are many gas stations in Chicago that sell ice, which is going to be very important within the next week. One can cool themselves down with cold water and cold beverages along with simply applying ice to the skin.
Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is that electricity bills may go up from the higher usage of air conditioners, but it is necessary. Elders must be placed in cool environments to lower the risk of heat stroke and or the worsening of physical conditions.
Additionally, pets and/or animals that are sensitive to extreme heat also need to be kept in cool environments. No one wants to come and see their cat spread out and not moving because it’s way too hot for them to have zoomies.
Chicago’s Most Vulnerable Population
Finally, the city of Chicago needs to assist those without housing in times of extreme weather. They don’t have access to adequate shelter, and therefore, most of the tips for high temperatures given earlier simply don’t apply to them.
Those without housing suffer through blistering heat and harsh winters. They are human beings that deserve kindness and compassion. This heat that is coming to Chicago will expose the cracks in the system that simply aren’t being addressed. This heat wave is supposedly only going to be a weeklong, though it may feel like a lifetime.
