September sixteenth is around the corner. While this date might not mean much to some people, to Chicagoans, it means parade time. Every year the city of Chicago hosts one of the biggest parades in the city. The Mexican Independence Parade.

What Is Mexican Independence Day?

Just like the US, Mexico and other countries celebrate their own independence day as well. In this instance, Mexico’s Independence falls on September 16. This was the day where Mexico became free from Spain in 1810. It is mistaken by many people for Cinco de Mayo to be the Mexican Independence Day but that is not what it is. Cinco de Mayo is actually just the date in which Mexico won the Battle of Puebla against the French Empire. This battle was held in 1862 which means 52 years after Mexico became independent.

One of The Biggest Parades Yet

This event has been hosted yearly in Chicago and it always attracts thousands of people. It is considered to be one of the biggest event hosted by Chicago. This event is always hosted on exactly September 16 which this year lands on a Saturday. However this is the first time it ever lands on a weekend. Therefore, it will be doubled as packed.

“We’re expecting over 400,000 spectators,” said Jennifer Aguilar, executive director of the Little Village Chamber of Commerce. Preparations are already being made. It is hosted in Little Village on 26th street. Being ten days away from it, decorations have been begun to be put up around the street. This years theme is called “Tu Mexico, Tu Chicago” and it will display each Mexican state.

“We are thrilled to partner with Telemundo Chicago, and having Penelope Menchaca as our Parade Marshal adds a special touch to this iconic event,” stated Jennifer.

Public Safety Concern

However, even though everyone is excited about this, the city is concerned about the behavior of the community when this is hosted. Last year’s parade was chaotic with the police having to close many roads in downtown due to the people celebrating there. People were throwing illegal fireworks and causing traffic.

“We remind those participating in events to be respectful of their neighbors and communities, as well as workers at critical facilities such as hospitals. They should also be mindful of first responders and emergency vehicles that are required to pass through areas where celebrations are occurring citywide,” stated the Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management & Communications (OEMC).

The city of Chicago is hoping that with the precautions they will be taking this year, will be enough to get people to remain respectful and celebrate in peace. However, they are not so hopeful as containing more than 400 thousand people behaved on an exciting day can be extremely difficult. “We do know that some people will decide to go ahead and celebrate that way. But we just wish people would do so respectfully, and be considerate of the neighbors in that area,” stated Jennifer.

Beautiful Traditions, Beautiful People

Nonetheless, people are very excited about the parade and are patiently waiting for the date to approach. Meanwhile, the city will be preparing for this event. The city of Chicago encourages everyone to attend and witness the beauty of Mexican culture.

As well as enjoying many traditional foods that will be sold at the parade. Therefore, people should begin preparing themselves for the upcoming event. Remember that it will most likely be really hot out, so make sure to bring money with you to buy drinks or bring your own. Nonetheless, the city of Chicago is very excited for this event and it will hopefully be better than last year.
