Authorities arrested 16 people who are connected to one of the most famous Mafias, the Gambino family. Afterward, prosecutors confirmed ten of the men arrested were linked to the Gambino family. Currently, there is no confirmation that the other six people, who the Feds arrested, are part of the mafia family.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office of the Eastern District of New York, every defendant is being blamed for conducting “assaults, arson, violent extortion and lastly union related crimes.” Another thing, these cases will take place in the Brooklyn Federal Court. They also stated the Gambino associates committed the crimes to help in the reign of New York’s demolition businesses.
The arrests that were made were a very coordinated effort with Italy. U.S. officers arrested ten of the men and the Italian Law enforcement caught the other six. Additionally, the six Gambino associates have the same charges as the ones here in the U.S.
Furthermore, the names of the people who were taken into custody were announced by prosecutors. A few of the people are Angelo Gradilone or another name they go by is “Fifi,” James LaForte, Vito Rappa, Francesco Vicari, also referred to as “Uncle Ciccio,” and lastly Kyle Johnson or called “Twin.” Following some of these people are only Gambino soldiers. Others are Sicilian Mafia members.
However, one of the members that stuck out the most was Joesph Lanni, who is alleged to be the Gambino Captain. The reason he stuck out was because prosecutors believe that he is Joe Brooklyn and if so, this will be a big deal, as they have arrested someone with a good chunk of power within the Gambino Family.
The Gambino family history
The Gambino crime family is one of many other famous criminal organizations. Salvatore D’Aquila led the formation of the organization in the early 1900s. Following the creation of the Crime Family, they soon joined and became one of five families on the New York governing boards for organized crime families named The Commission. The one who made The commission was Charlie Luciano.
Later in 1928, Salvatore D’Aquila was murdered and Frank Scalise took the family over but was only the leader for three years. But with a new leader after Frank came one of the best crime bosses for the Gambino family who was named Vincent Mangano. He was the one to establish the family as one of the biggest in the whole world. But in 1951 the reign of Vincent Mangano was done as Albert Anastasia took control. Albert was considered the most impulsive leader and oversaw an organization named Murder Incorporated which would carry out hundreds of Mob-related assassinations. But soon after he would be murdered as his crew plotted against him and killed him in 1957.
Then after that one of the most successful crime bosses came to rule the family. That man was Carlo Gambino. Carlo improved income largely and would be out of public sight. He would be one of few who weren’t even closely connected to a single crime and would go on to run the mafia til 1976 without seeing the inside of a jail cell.
