As of last week, a woman in Ohio has received a sentence to work in fast food for two months. Why? For assaulting a fast food employee.
Burrito Bowl to the Face
On September 5, Emily Russell was just working her normal shift at Chipotle when this traumatizing incident took place. A video taken by a bystander shows 39-year-old Rosemary Hayne assaulting Russell by throwing a Chipotle burrito bowl at her face. Before the bowl of food assault, Russell is seen trying to de-escalate the situation, providing solutions to Hayne. Luckily when Hayne was leaving, staff members were able to obtain her license plate and call the authorities with urgency.

Sentencing
Judge Timothy Gilligan is one who was handling this fast food assault case. Gilligan states to Hayne that he’s very displeased with the behavior displayed by the mother of four. “You didn’t get your burrito bowl the way you like it and this is how you respond?” he said. Further stating his disapproval by saying this isn’t a reality show and expects much more mature behavior than displayed.
Hayne tried to defend her heinous behavior by saying “If I showed you how my food looked and how my food looked a week later from that same restaurant, it’s disgusting-looking.” But Judge Gilligan didn’t want to hear it. Gilligan states that each time he watches the footage, it makes him angrier and angrier. Therefore, the judge gave Hayne two choices. One choice being to serve 90 days in jail or serve 30 days and spend the remainder of the sentence working in fast food. Hayne chose the latter.
Now on top of serving 30 days in jail and working for fast food, Hayne also has to pay a fine of $250 and be on probation for two years. Gilligan says that he offered the sentence to her, to possibly make her think twice about her behavior. Rather than giving her the standard sentence.
Afterthoughts
With this sentencing, many people might think Hayne got it easy. A slap on the wrist. However, Russell believes that the ruling is very fair. Chipotle’s chief corporate affairs officer, Laurie Schalow, also agrees that the decision is fair. Schalow also spoke on behalf of the franchise, stating that Chipotle that their employees’ health and well-being are their top priority.
Hopefully, Hayne will learn a thing or two about how treat those in the service industry.
