Migrants in Chicago seem to be going through the worst of what this world has to offer this season. Chicago’s winters are nothing to scoff at and it seems that the asylum seekers are finding any way they can to survive. The city of Chicago seems to be trying its best to house the migrants.
However, it seems that Chicago may need to try harder to house the immigrants. Chicago has chosen to designate itself as a sanctuary city. This means that when in times of crisis, immigrants for other nations may
seek asylum in Chicago.
Sanctuary Responsibilities

Chicago chose to say that it would help others in time of need. So, as the winters become worse and worse, the city of Chicago must hold up on its end. If any of the migrants die because they were unhoused, that is on the city of Chicago. These people deserve safe and clean environments during their stay in the windy city.
However, it is up to the city officials to make sure that they are indeed safe and secure. “Residents have complained of faulty heat, water leaks, expired food and crowded conditions that are closed to the public, including reporters and some volunteers who were critical in providing medical care at police stations,” according to AP News.
Safety and Care
A migrant child died because he wasn’t able to receive adequate health care. The migrants are in shelters that are cramped and are being filled more and more by the day. These people deserve help because they are human beings that asked for help.
The city of Chicago must recognize their humanity and provide adequate housing and clean safe spaces for everyone that lives in Chicago which currently includes the Venezuelan migrants.
Winter Struggles
Chicago’s winters are rough for even the most experienced of Chicagoans. Chicago winters are infamously long and rough for everyone. Those who are housed are able to deal with it. However, if one is a migrant without a shelter, or a member of Chicago’s homeless population, one may have some trouble during this season.
This shouldn’t be the case for any person in Chicago, many of the migrants are sheltered and housed, however some are not, and many of the shelters are not up to standard. The city of Chicago must do better. At this moment it is unclear if there are any migrants in the cold, however, there shouldn’t be if there are.
