Spring Break
This years spring break the Florida city decided to announce a breakup with spring break. A video campaign was released on the Miami Beach TV announcing their plans to set up stricter rules for visitors. They decided to come up with this campaign a year after two fatal shootings during that years spring break. That was the third year in a row that they had to establish emergency measures to control rowdy crowds.
The video shows disorderly behavior and harmful violence which also lead to the city to “drawing the line.”
The city expects the most spring break crowds during the highest impact weekends, which are March 7–10 and March 14–17. During these times, the pronouncements are more strict. During certain weekends all South Beach parking garages will be closed from Thursday at 6am until Monday at 6am. At the same time, the flat rate parking price will rise to $100. The parking restrictions will not apply to permit holders, employees, Miami beach residents or access card holders. Even though Miami has a lot to offer, like fun and hot weather, but many feel as if its not worth the danger.
What occurred
Last march there were back to back shootings that caused the lives of two people one who was a student on vacation there in Miami. In total there were 573 arrests were made during spring break in the year of 2023, This being confirmed by a spokes person from the city of Miami. Miami’s crime rate has been relatively high over the past few years.
Miami Beach has implemented 6pm beach closures, large police presence and mandatory closures for the local liquor stores.
Also in 2021 they declared a state of emergency due to a large amount of crowds during the the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to this curfews were set to 8pm. The campaign is meant to inform any incoming spring breakers. It was announced that anyone coming to cause problems that they are not tolerating any uncontrollable behavior.

A number of individuals in the video who seem to be residents are seen breaking up with spring breakers. It censures visitors who instead of appreciating the fun in Miami they want to get drunk in public and ignore the laws they have. It also shows the mayhem from the previous spring break and refers to the episodes as “the breaking point” during spring break.
Further news on the breakup
The officials of Miami said the city will set up DUI checkpoints, early curfews, bag checks, expensive parking fees, and also increase law enforcement. This will be in effect every Thursday through Sunday in March.
There were reports from NBC south Florida that the spring break crowds were gathering in Miami beach despite the restrictions the same day the campaign launched. People online questioned that the new rules would prevent college students from traveling to Miami.
After the first week of the very first spring break weekend of 2024 travelers and residents began to chime in on the new rules that lead to smaller groups of people coming out and quieter nights.
Police in every area
There are police officers on almost every street from the departments across south Florida, state troopers and federal agents. Many people think this is the most law enforcement resources Miami Beach had ever brought out.
Since this years spring break began officers have made more than 140 arrests. The amount decreased by 7% based off the number of arrests last year. “Our message is very clear we’re not doing this to ruin anyone’s vacation plans but to ensure public safety.” Bess said.
How residents feel about the breakup
Some of the visitors felt like the new regulations were unfair. They avoid restrictions by going across the bay to the city of Miami. A visitor, Sebastian Huidoro told WFOR-TV his vehicle towing cost him $345.
Though some Miami residents are in full participation of the breakup. Most residents have stated that this breakup would be the best spring break for them in years. They will be able to go out on a regular day and not have to worry about huge crowds, loud noise, and a wrecked city. Despite all of the changed made visitors still managed to have good time.
Visitors think it has been more calm they’ve been to Miami beach plenty of times and this is the first time in a long time the Beach has been in control.
