Vehicle Crash Kills 3 Kids
Another tragedy of families losing their loved ones in a fatal crash. On March 11, 2024, a bus was transporting kids to school when they were struck and killed. The accident happened around 11:30 a.m., killing three young kids, the bus driver, and the truck driver.
Officials say the bus was traveling east when it somehow crossed over into the westbound lane and was struck. Even though both vehicles had gone up in flames after the impact, they were able to identify everyone from the crash. Five-year-old Maria Miller, three-year-old Andrew Miller, and three-year-old Noah Driscoll were the children killed.
Along with both drivers, bus driver Angela Spiker 57 killed, and David Coufal 72 was the truck driver. However the cause of the accident is stated as unknown during this time, there is still a current investigation going.
Sheriff Bill Redshaw Speaks on the Crash
“There’s not words at this time that can be said,” Redshaw said. “When you have a loss of life like this, it’s devastating.” While expressing that these deaths hit the community very hard.
“They were always ready to play hug. They loved coming to church and loved their family so much,” said Thompson, who co-pastors the church with her husband, Brandon. The Miller family attends the church.
“Everyone was ready to step up and do whatever it took to support Sarah and her family, It’s been really hard for everybody. It’s just a different dynamic when little children are involved. It just hits everybody.”
Due to the heartbreaking events, school had been canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday. The school district has also contributed a statement expressing their grief on losing a fellow work member and kids. It is hard for anyone to grasp how this can just happen in the blink of an eye. Unfortunately, in such small communities, everyone knows everyone, so it can make times like these much harder.
Further Actions to be Seen
An investigation is being done by the National Transportation Safety Board team as well as state police. The autopsy of the victims was being held on Tuesday in Springfield. As much as authorities wish they could provide more information at this time to the grieving families, it is hard when the cause is unknown.
It is not every day that you see a bus drive into ongoing traffic, and with no survivors it is hard to tell why that happened. Adding on to the struggle, both motor vehicles had undergone flames so determining a medical issue or something in the bloodstream is difficult.
The school bus belonged to the Schuyler-Industry Schools district, which is based in Rushville. Email messages sent to the school district were not immediately answered Monday evening.
Praying that families get the answers to their questions as they try to navigate through this extremely dark time of their lives. Crashes like these ruin people’s lives forever.
