Fatal Neglect
On February 22, 2024, Kristel A. Candelario, a 32-year-old Cleveland mother, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and child endangerment. After her fatal vacation caused her toddler to died. Candelario pled guilty to killing her 16-month-old daughter by leaving her alone in a Pack ‘n Play enclosure during a 10-day vacation last summer in 2023, and she was sentenced to life in prison.
The mother pled guilty last month as part of a plea agreement with Cuyahoga County prosecutors, who dropped two murder charges and a felony assault charge.
According to authorities, Candelario left her daughter Jailyn at home alone on June 6, 2023, to go on a week-long vacation in Detroit, Michigan, and Puerto Rico. When she returned on June 16, 2023, she discovered Jailyn motionless and phoned 911. This tragic incident unfolded as a direct consequence of the mother’s vacation leading to her toddler’s death and a life sentence.
Upon Arrival
After Candelario returned home on June 16 in the 3100 block of West 97th Street, she contacted the police. Cleveland police officers responded to the scene. When officers arrived they discovered the infant unresponsive in a playpen full of blankets saturated in feces and urine. Moments later Jailyn was then pronounced dead at the scene. Officers also mentioned that when the child passed away, she was severely dehydrated and starved.

It is also crucial to mentioned that before Candelario reached out to the police and called 911. She took the time to dress Jailyn in clean clothes. This can be seen as her failed attempt to try and cover the gruesome reality of the situation.
Justice for Jailyn
Despite Candelario’s attorney’s unsuccessful attempts to persuade the jury that she was depressed at the time she abandoned her child. The court room did not believe anything that her prosecutor had to say. In fact evidence was shown the day of the trial that proved otherwise. For instance, pictures of Candelario traveling and having fun where shown in the court room. She was having fun without a care in the world while her daughter was dying at home all alone. The fatal outcome of the mother’s vacation resulted in her toddler’s tragic dead and a subsequent life sentence for her.
However, Candelario did mentioned she prayed daily for forgiveness. Also stating,
There’s so much pain that I have in regards to the loss of my baby, Jailyn, she said. I’m extremely hurt about everything that happened. I am not trying to justify my actions, but nobody knew how much I was suffering and what I was going through … God and my daughter have forgiven me.
Furthermore, Jailyn’s case has even been described as “one of those truly unimaginable cases that will stick with you for many years to come.” Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley also said in a statement:
As prosecutors, it is our job to represent the victims and today we spoke on behalf of 16-month-old Jailyn — who is no longer with us — due to the selfish decisions her mother made. This conviction today, is the first step towards justice for Jailyn.
Anger and Betrayal
Many people are angry at Candelario for committing such cruelty towards an innocent child, including the judge who convicted her. Judge Brendan Sheehan told Candelario the day of her trial she committed “the ultimate betrayal,” by leaving her daughter alone and denying her the right to food and water.
Judge Sheehan told Candelario:
Just as you didn’t let Jailyn out of her confinement, so too you should spend the rest of your life in a cell without freedom, Sheehan said. The only difference will be, the prison will at least feed you and give you liquid that you denied her.
Overall, the aftermath of the mother’s vacation, which resulted in her toddler’s death and a life sentence, is a striking reminder of the great tragedy that occurred. However, the outcome of the case also demonstrates that justice can be achieved and that if we come together and advocate for those who are no longer able to speak, we can prove that their deaths were not insignificant.
