Dollar Tree Straying Away From its Original Price Roots
The Dollar Tree company plans to gradually raise its price ceiling from their stores. In fact, last June, the most an individual could expect to spend in this company was a max of $5. However, this year it all can change. Inflation will strike these stores once again. In Dollar Tree stores in particular, Executive Chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling said that this year, it’ll be $7.
He also mentioned that this price raise is part of the company’s “multi-price point strategy” subsequently, offering shoppers a more “relevant assortment,” in terms of what the stores offer for customers to purchase. Also, another important statement he made, in regards of the price increase and the number of stores being impacted nationwide by this increase this year, was the following,
“This year, across 3,000 stores, we expect to expand our multi-price assortment by over 300 items at price points ranging from $1.50 to $7.”
Furthermore, Dreiling did clarify that the “vast majority” of the store items will remain at its entry price of $1.25, which this in itself is a drastic change for many residents compared to when everything was $1. Now, some of the items that are expected to be higher priced in the company are the following:
- Food.
- Snacks.
- Beverages.
- Pet care.
- Personal care and more.
Prices Increase After Dollar Store Closures

Not to say, this new price change that is coming up this year, is very controversial for many different reasons. The main reason is because not a lot of people agree with this price modification within their company.
Nonetheless, this price raise started becoming more prominent after the company announced their plan to close several dollars store’s locations. That being said, about 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of this year, along with 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores over the next several years will be shut down.
Previous Target Price Cap on the Table of $10
However, there is a huge price shift difference that society will face when going shopping to dollar stores now. There was another proposal in regard to this price increase. That being said, during the earning call, officials also hinted to even higher price caps, in terms of item prices. Not to mention, a target price cap of $10 was previously on the table. What Dreiling said about this proposed target price was the following,
“Now, in regards to the $10, we continue to believe in the $10 target that we announced, well, I guess about a year ago, and we’re continuing to march toward that goal.”
He also added that this proposal is very considerable. However, it’s still difficult to pinpoint when they would establish this new price target.
“We still believe in the target, but we believe the path is to get to $7 in 2024, and we’re intently focused on that. But again, we want a positive 2024. And then as we move through ’24 and ’25, we’ll give you more of a handle on the $10.”
These statements come to show that residents should still look forward to the expected target in 2025, while everyone adapts to the new price increase this year as we move throughout the year.
People Now Rather Go Shopping at Walmart than Dollar Tree After the Price Raise
So, as Dollar Tree plans to raise up their prices to $7 this year, people are understandably very upset and angry about this strategy that the company wants to incorporate within their system. Dollar Tree is shifting away from the dollar prices with these continuous price raises, that essentially impact its communities, and further angers consumers. Keep in mind, many families rely on Dollar Tree’s deals to save money. A Dollar Tree regular customer from Florida, Scott Kolack, said the following,
“if it were really going to go up like $7, that’d be too much. I’d rather just get everything at Walmart.”
Just like Kolack, there are many customers like him. Another similar perspective is Vizier’s, she is at the dollar store almost everyday shopping for essential items for herself and her son. She did emphasize that she is considering shopping elsewhere if the Breaux Bridge Dollar Tree is hit with the increase.
Also, a huge possible factor that Dollar Tree is planning to raise the prices is because the CEO of the company stated that the fastest-growing demographics make $125,000 a year. However, he did not say that this was specifically the reason. Eric Stuerken, co-founder of financial repair firm ‘Better Qualified,’ mentioned that it does play a role for this plan to raise prices. He said the following,
“They’re doing it because their consumers now are making more money.”
