Oxford School Shooting
School shootings are all too common in the United States. It seems that nothing is being done to prevent guns from entering schools. Parkland, Oxford, are some of the many schools that have experienced a tragedy of this nature. There needs to be a form of major security being implemented at all schools in the U.S. It is also very important to acknowledge the warning signs that are displayed by certain people that may commit a crime of this nature.
This certainly applies to parents and their children. There have been school shooters that have displayed many warning signs before committing the horrific crime. This can include posting threats on social medias, gathering ammunition and guns, or even signs of depression.
Parents of Michigan School Shooter
Parents Jennifer and James Crumbley are now in court to receive their verdict. This is after they acknowledged that there were several warning signs given from their son Ethan but had done nothing to intervene and ensure that a crime of this nature did not occur. In addition, this was a major point that was brought up when they were being sentenced.
However, this is the first time that a sentencing of parents had ever occurred in the United States. “They were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after prosecutors presented evidence of an unsecured gun at home and indifference toward the teen’s mental health,” according to WoodTV. They were both sentenced to up to 10 years in prison without bond. Furthermore, Judge Cheryl Matthews who presided this case, hopes that in the future this sentencing can deter school shootings from occurring, not only in Oxford, but in the entire country.
The Future of This Incident
Ethan is continuing to serve his life sentence, but it certainly is not enough given the fact that he took 4 innocent lives. These families are forever torn apart, and no amount of time will ever bring their children back. Therefore, this is why it is imperative that the government continue to work to find ways to resolve this important issue. These are innocent lives being taken for no reason whatsoever, and this needs to come to a stop immediately. Whether that be banning guns entirely, something needs to be done.
