Shooting in Uptown Chicago
Another shooting goes down in the city of Chicago. Many of these gun violence shootings are targeted. However, unfortunately a lot of the times these shootings are also aiming at no target, and many fall victims of gun violence. Which this question was brought up to this new case of the 21 year old woman who was just walking her dog in the Uptown community and then got shot. Nonetheless, police have not stated yet, whether the shooting was random or targeted.
Furthermore, this woman was identified as Kathy Canjura, she resides in Uptown. Now, more about when the case happened, this incident occurred in the morning of Tuesday, April, 9. This comes to show that now shootings don’t happen in specific locations anymore. They just tend to happen anywhere and at any time at this point in the city. Also those that are part of the problem of gun violence don’t care who they hurt or injure during this nonsense violence.
Consequently, this places individuals in the communities of the Chicagoland area to live more in fear for their safety and wellbeing. The reason being that shootings and gun violence is an issue that is increasing by the day. The spike even goes higher, especially when the weather is warmer in the Windy City.
About the Incident that Canjura Faced

Now, like mentioned previously, the 21 year old, Canjura, was just casually walking her 9-month-old, red nose pit bull mix, Milo. She was walking on the side in the 1300 block of West Sunnyside Avenue. After this, is when someone in a silver SUV fired shots. These gunshots took place at around 12:40 a.m. Unfortunately, Canjura, happened to be there in the location when all of this incident went down and she endured a gunshot wound to her left upper leg.
Canjura expressed to ABC 7 News, that before the shots were fired, she remembers that her dog was acting “funny” and while she was trying to see what was wrong with him, that’s when the SUV slowed down and rolled their window down and just out of nowhere shot two gunshots. That is when one of them hit her, and then they just fled the scene. Canjura claimed that she was an innocent bystander.
After the Uptown incident, the victim, Canjura, was taken immediately, to the nearest local hospital. More specifically, she was taken to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. Fortunately, when she was rushed to the hospital she was in fair condition, despite her gunshot wound and pain. As of now, police have stated that no one is in custody and Area 3 detectives are still investigating.
Furthermore, neighbors are not shocked about the news, because they are aware of how dangerous and unsafe the city is becoming for residents. A neighbor told CBS News the following, her name is Maria Hugo,
I think there’s only so much you can do. If you have to walk your dog, you have to walk your dog. I don’t think anyone expects to walk their dog and get shot.
“It Could Happen to Anybody”
Fortunately, Canjura is now recovering at home from her gunshot wound. After she was shot in the Uptown community while walking her dog. However, she is left with high medical expenses and a considerable road to recovery. It is upsetting to know that this can happen to anybody, and this time it happened to a 21 year old, Truman College student. This is the college that she attends while also working. For work, she has worked at Edgewater Tacos for three years. Her boss, loyal patrons, and her community is doing what they can to help support her financially with her medical expenses.
Two days later after the incident, Owner Patricia Guerrero stated that it was a busy Thursday night, since she’s down one employee after the near tragedy. Guerrero expressed the following her appreciated worker and family-friend,
She’s my right arm, and right now, I’m functioning at 50%. I need her to come back.
Also her patron, George Sperekas made a very outstanding comment about this unfortunate incident and gun violence,
It could happen to anybody, which is a shame. And, this is someone’s daughter, right? This is someone’s sister.
