Just recently, Chicago held its annual Cinco De Mayo parade where everyone was eager to join, however, the parade had to unfortunately end earlier than usual due to gang violence that was going on during the parade.
History of Cinco De Mayo
May Fifth is a day where many Mexicans celebrate together. This day represents the winning of the Battle of Puebla in 1891. This however, is not an official Mexican holiday. This is because many people confuse Cinco De Mayo with the Mexican Independence Day. This day was simply a French-Mexican war for the state of Puebla. Mexican Independence Day actually falls on September 16th and that day is celebrated all over Mexico. May fifth, while it is not celebrated everywhere in Mexico, is indeed a big thing in the state of Puebla.
This day however, became very popular in the United States. Many Americans celebrate this day to appreciate Mexican heritage and culture. While many people outside of Mexican heritage might be a bit confused about the holiday’s true meaning, many Mexicans enjoy seeing others embrace their culture on this day.
Chicago Parade, Celebration Ruined

Since Chicago has many Mexican residents, it is no surprise that the city would host a parade dedicated to Cinco De Mayo. Unfortunately, this got ruined by some gang members who decided to cause chaos during this event. According to the event organizers, this parade was set up around noon Sunday near Cermak Road by the Heart of Chicago. The parade went from Cermak Road and it reached Marshall Boulevard. many people were excited to see what this parade had to offer. It would have been a beautiful experience for many if it was not cancelled due to gang related violence.
Chicago Police stated that they made a joint decision along with parade organizers, that it would be best for the event to be stopped. This was to ensure the safety of the residents. However, to the surprise of the residents, the 25th ward Alderman, stated that the parade would not be cancelled, instead, relocated. “We thank all the residents who came together to celebrate this important cultural and community occasion,” Stated the Alderman’s office.
