New value meal
Fast food consumers are sick of having to spend all of their money, and some businesses like McDonald’s are starting to notice.
As initially reported by Bloomberg, the Golden Arches may be introducing a new value meal that will include a McChicken or McDouble, fries, and a drink for just $5. Currently, the restaurant offers several individual items on its $1, $2, and $3 menu.
McDonald’s is preparing to launch a discount meal at its American locations, according to a May 10 CNBC story. This might include a $5 meal offer, which would be comparatively inexpensive. Two individuals familiar with the situation said that the $5 meal, which was initially reported by Bloomberg, would come with four items: fries, a drink, a McChicken or McDouble, and four pieces of chicken nuggets.
Fast food frustiations
The announcement coincides with social media users lamenting the increased prices of fast food on the platform, particularly with regard to Filet O’ Fish, double cheeseburgers, and single hash browns, which they claim are driving people away.
Only a few weeks have passed since McDonald’s officials revealed that foot traffic at its restaurants is growing more slowly. At that point, talks about introducing a new low-cost meal began. Customers who are sick of inflation are reducing their consumption of fast food after several companies, including McDonald’s and Subway, raised their prices in recent years to offset increased labor and ingredient expenses.
During an earnings call with analysts and investors on April 30, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski stated that the company had to be “laser-focused” on keeping pricing low in order to get customers to come back.
Pricing Policy
The business claims that local franchisees determine its prices, which vary from restaurant to restaurant. It also notes that it currently offers value specials like “Free Fry Fridays,” in which users of its app can receive a free medium fry with any minimum purchase of $1. This promotion is available at participating restaurants until the end of the year. Additionally, it claims that local McDonald’s Rewards members receive exclusive discounts and perks.

While a survey of multiple McDonald’s restaurants in four major U.S. cities indicates that meal bundles cost more than $4, McDonald’s claims that 90% of its franchisees in the United States are selling meal bundles for $4 or less.
Colleen Pipes told ABC News, “I joked that this was fine dining now, because I might as well go at a sit-down restaurant and be served [to] pay those type of prices.” Her video went viral when she paid $14 on a fast food order.
Rising costs
As to the Department of Labor, the costs of groceries increased by 26% in March, while the prices of fast food increased by 33% from 2019. Businesses such as Starbucks, the Seattle-based coffee company, reported a 7% decline in transactions and a slowdown in revenue.
According to Starbucks, some of their outlets’ pricing increases are the consequence of consumers choosing to customize their drinks, which can raise the cost. This information was provided to ABC News. Outside of restaurants, consumer behavior is also shifting as shoppers, like Lorin Augeri of Tampa, Florida, visit several supermarkets in search of the greatest deals on groceries.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture projects that the price of beef will rise by 3.3% in 2024, while the price of eggs will rise by 4.8% and the price of sugar and sweets by 4.3% this year. A lot has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Wake Forest University School of Business marketing professor Roger Beahm, who spoke with ABC News.
Introduction
“Before the pandemic consumers tended to shop primarily at one grocery store — the pandemic was very disruptive,” he stated. “A lot of the things that customers desired were unavailable at one specific store. As a result, people began to frequent more traditional grocery stores.”
McDonald’s has long maintained and reaffirmed that prices vary by area as a result of local franchisee selections, even though the business has not yet formally announced the new value meal.
Of course, a $5 meal wouldn’t turn McDonald’s into a trailblazer in the fast food sector. In addition to its $5 Biggie Bag, Wendy’s debuted its 4 for $4 meal in 2015, which consists of a tiny cheeseburger, four pieces of chicken nuggets, small fries, and a small drink. With the latter package, you get four chicken nuggets, a small order of fries, a small drink, and a choice of sandwich.
