According to recent reports, the campaigns of Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are already arguing in advanced about their high-stake September 10 debate. The reason for the conflict pertains to the fact that both parties are uncertain on weather mic’s should be muted during the debate, with the exception of the candidate whose time it is to speak. Although it is fairly common for candidates to confront each other over debate mechanics. This time around stakes are higher. Due to the first debate during the campaign leading to Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that the rule involving muted mic’s was previously established and already agreed upon by both Biden and Trump at their CNN debate in June. This decision was aimed at reducing interruptions and ensuring a more orderly discussion. Moreover, based on the candidates previous decisions the mic rule was a regulation meant to be passed down and used in future disputes. However, subsequent updates have revealed Trump’s and Harri’s view on this particular rule. Both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with the muted mic’s regulation.
For instance, Kamala Harris’ campaign is proposing for a format modification where both candidates’ mic’s remain live during the debate. Brian Fallon, Kamala Harris’ senior adviser for communications, has shown strong support for this method, claiming that it is consistent with previous debating patterns and provides a fair and honest exchange of ideas. On the other hand, Trump’s campaign is advocating for silenced mic’s to shield their candidate from potential gaffes and outbursts. However, Trump has been accused of undermining and sabotaging his team’s efforts to uphold this rule. Given that Trump has declared that he ‘prefers having the mics on.’ However, he had also made the following claims,
I didn’t like it the last time, but it worked out fine.
We agreed to the same rules — same rules, same specifications. And I think that’s probably what it should be.
‘The Issue has Been Resolved’

In addition, as previously stated, Trump has not made it clear whether he agrees with microphones on or off for the upcoming debate. Although, he has made minor comments here and there, implying that, while he dislikes the mic regulation, he is willing to accept and work with it. However, this remarks have prompted numerous individuals to believe he is unconcerned about the microphone rules. Including a Kamala Harris spokesman who said on Monday to considered the mic issue “resolved” after Trump’s comments.
On top of that, Michael Tyler, Kamala Harris’ campaign communications director, further added to the disregard, Donald Trump has showcased. By stating during an appearance on MSNBC,
Trump doesn’t care – doesn’t matter to him whether or not the mics are hot, and frankly, that he would prefer if they were hot. So I think this issue is resolved.
A Sabotage Attempt
Additionally, due to the chaos that has arisen prior to the upcoming debate. Jason Miller, Trump’s senior adviser, took the disagreement one step further, alleging that Kamala Harris wants to sabotage the presidential debate. Miller managed this by claiming that Harris has yet to sit for an interview or hold a new’s conference. Through his words, he depicted Harris and her campaign’s actions as a ‘method’ to avoid debates with Trump.
Moreover, Miller’s motivations for accusing Harris campaign of such heinous deeds are unknown. However, it is believe that he chose to do this in an effort to “protect” his campaign against Harris possible debate modifications. In additions, although he might have resorted to very low declarations. It was mentioned since the beggining that the Republican candidate had consented to the ABC debate under the same exact terms and conditions as the CNN debate.
For these reasons, it is partially understandable why the Democrat’s actions might be view as a direct attack. Not only for the microphone incident, but also because reportedly Harris is requesting a sitting debate with notes and opening statements. And according to the Republicans, this are obvious indications of Kamala Harris attempting to bend the rules to her advantage.
Overall, Harris campaign obviously refuted Miller’s claims allegedly requesting an advantage. Nonetheless, despite the back-and-forth arguing it is crucial for both campaigns to remember the true objective of the debate.
