The tourist was attacked while snorkeling with her husband and friends near Playa de Las Teresitas. Witnesses said she screamed and thrashed in the water shortly after entering.
The spokeswoman said, “She was flown to a hospital on the Canary island of Gran Canaria by helicopter, where she passed away.”
A spokesman for Spain’s maritime rescue organization Sasemar said the shark attack occurred 180 kilometers west of Dakhla in Western Sahara and 514 kilometers south-southwest of Gran Canaria, CNN reported Wednesday.
The spokesman said the helicopter transported the woman in the evening at approximately 1800 GMT. She was en route to a hospital in the Gran Canaria resort of Las Palmas when she passed away. The boat, Dalliance Chichester, left the port of Las Palmas on September 14, according to the boat tracking website vesselfinder.com.
