Pleading Guilty with 22 counts of Fraud

In federal court on Thursday, disgraced lawyer Alex Murdaugh admitted guilt to 22 counts of financial fraud and money laundering.

Murdaugh’s attorney, Dick Harpootlian, told reporters after the court that his client had been “completely cooperative” and had shown regret to the victims of his theft. “We think that this is the first step he will take to go past this. He made not a single factual argument. He didn’t confront me with any arguments to refute any accusations.”

Murdaugh was convicted in March of murdering his wife, Maggie, and their youngest son, Paul in June 2021 near the family’s estate. He is currently receiving a life sentence.

The former attorney was indicted on 22 counts by a federal grand jury in May for bank and wire fraud. Also, he was charged with money laundering, and conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud.

In the period between 2005 and 2021, Murdaugh, 54, allegedly engaged in three different schemes to gain money and property. From his customers who had suffered personal injuries while he was employed as a personal injury lawyer at his Hampton, South Carolina, law company.

As a result, The scams included working with a banker to commit wire fraud and bank fraud. As well as routing clients’ settlement cash to his own accounts and a phony account with the name “Forge.” In November 2022, the banker Russell Laffitte was found guilty of six federal crimes related to the conspiracy, according to the prosecution.

Murdaugh was additionally charged with conspiring with another personal injury lawyer to steal money from the estate of Gloria Satterfield. Nearly $3.5 million, according to the prosecution, was transferred into Murdaugh’s fictitious account “for his own personal enrichment.”

According to his attorney, Jim Griffin, the prosecution has recommended that the federal case’s sentence be served concurrently with the state case’s projected sentence for the same offenses.

If Murdaugh intends to enter a guilty plea to the state counts, his attorneys declined to say so to the media. At this time On November 27, he is scheduled to appear in court on those allegations.

According to Judge Clifton Newman, who delivered the verdict in March, Murdaugh is currently serving two consecutive life terms for the murders of his wife and son. Early in September, Murdaugh’s attorneys submitted a plea for a new trial in the double homicide case. In the plea, his lawyer claims a court clerk had tampered with the jury.

The longtime housekeeper of the Murdaughs, Gloria Satterfield, passed away in 2018 after what was allegedly a “trip and fall accident” at the family home, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Carolina. It was alleged that Murdaugh, 54, conspired with another personal injury attorney, Cory Fleming, to steal settlement money.

While Satterfield’s estate did not get any of the settlement money, Murdaugh is accused of ordering Fleming to issue checks totaling nearly $3.5 million to a bank account that he utilized for his own personal profit, according to the prosecution.

“Trust in our legal system begins with trust in its lawyers,” said U.S. Attorney Adair Boroughs in a statement. South Carolinians turn to attorneys when they are at their weakest, and in our state.
