Early on Tuesday, a container ship lost power and struck Baltimore’s Bridge, collapsing it and driving cars into the ocean. On Wednesday, divers continued their search for the six construction workers who have not yet been found. Eight or more people entered the water. Two members of the work crew were saved. However, the fate of the other six who had been patching potholes on the bridge is uncertain. They are believed to be missing and but more possibly dead.
The Blackout

According to an industry official, the cargo ship suffered a “complete blackout”. A few minutes prior to it crashing with the Bridge early on Tuesday. This blackout made the engine and navigation equipment powerless. Furthermore, the official, American Pilots Association executive director Clay Diamond, stated on Tuesday that he had been in regular contact with the Association of Maryland Pilots.
Along with that, it was unknown what was causing the system to malfunction. The propulsion system was still offline even though the ship’s backup generators were starting up and were partially restoring power.
According to Mr. Diamond, the pilot in charge of the ship gave the order to steer the ship as far to the left as possible and to drop the port anchor in an attempt to stop or delay the vessel’s drift toward the bridge as soon as the power went out. According to Mr. Diamond, those on the bridge who might have been harmed in an accident received protection by the pilot’s instructions.
Research and Impact
Just before the cargo ship, struck the bridge, it lost power and sent out a mayday call. In order to gather information regarding the precise circumstances of the collision, the U.S. Coast Guard boarded the ship on Wednesday. In the most recent interruption to global supply networks, the collapse is causing shipping. Also, trucking near one of the busiest ports on the American East Coast causes delays and increases expenses. It’s too early to estimate when the port will reopen. Also, it is too early to know when the bridge will be repaired or replaced according to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Two Bodies Recovered
As a result of a ship crashing with the Baltimore bridge early on Tuesday, two people’s bodies have been found at the scene, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., superintendent of the Maryland State Police. A 35-year-old and a 26-year-old were found inside a red pickup truck in the Patapsco River, close to the middle of the fallen Francis Scott Key Bridge, according to Butler’s statement on Wednesday.
Governor Evaluates the Harm in Baltimore
The aftermath of the Baltimore bridge collapse has been given a closer look by Governor Wes Moore of Maryland.
As to the governor’s office, Moore joined federal and local officials on a Coast Guard ship on Wednesday in order to have a better understanding of the ship’s trajectory and the cause of the crash. According to his office, his objectives were to gather more information, express gratitude to first responders, and assist the Coast Guard and other federal partners.
Remaining Missing Bodies
The construction workers have been missing for too long, according to officials, and they expected a rescue. They were in Baltimore, on the Francis Scott Key Bridge. A large cargo ship struck and caused the collapse of the Baltimore Bridge where construction workers were located, resulting in it falling into the Patapsco River. The Coast Guard called off its search for them late on Tuesday.
Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath stated at a press conference shortly after dusk, “, we do not believe we are going to find any of these individuals still alive, At this point ” citing the freezing water temperatures and the amount of time since the midnight crash. Until then, Maryland Governor Wes Moore had expressed optimism that the missing individuals may be located, despite law enforcement’s warnings about the icy water and the fact that they had not been seen since the ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge at 1:30 a.m.
Moore conveyed her sadness when authorities decided to halt the hunt for survivors.
“Our heart goes out to the families,” he stated. “I can’t imagine how painful today has been for these families, how painful these hours have been have been for these families.”
