Migrants Returning Back Home For Lack of Resources
Chicago migrants are really struggling with the resources that they have access to. Being the reason that it is not being enough to sustain them and their families. Especially, now that winter is right around the corner in the city of Chicago and the freezing temperatures are rapidly approaching.
Many migrants have been sleeping in the O’Hare Airport, Chicago police districts, Youth Sports fields, and on the streets. According to some Venezuelan migrants who traveled north to Chicago say that they are returning home due to the lack of infrastructure, jobs, cold weather, and resentful locals.
In Search of the ‘American Dream’
Most of the migrants came to the United States for a better future. As for a better life for themselves and for their families. However, constant waves of migrants kept coming in from Texas, which in result more resources were in demand because of the migrant crisis and the unbelievable amount of migrants.
Unfortunately, for many migrants the American Dream is becoming impossible and nonexistent for them. A fellow migrant, Michael Castejon, has made public statements of what his family is experiencing and that they have decided to head back home. He is tired of living in the streets and mentioned:
We didn’t know things would be this hard, I thought the process was faster.
We just want to be home. If we’re going to be sleeping in the streets here, we’d rather be sleeping in the streets over there.
The American Dream doesn’t exist anymore. There’s nothing here for us.

Castejon’s frustration is clearly expressed. Furthermore, he is tired of the lack of asylum or shelter, stable job opportunities or a job permit, and access for education for his children. Which is why he has determined that is would be a better decision to go back to Venezuela.
The Constant Migrant Struggles
Furthermore, with this crisis the funds and resources are depleting because they have to keep using them constantly for basic necessities. Even the 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale stated,
“We’re spending a lot of money every single day.” “I think up to $40 million a month, ladies and gentleman.”
One major problem is that the City officials reported that Chicago had received more than 19,000 migrants since August 2022. And addition, over 68,000 Chicago citizens and residents are currently and have been experiencing homelessness. Overall, this shows that the city is already facing homelessness issues. On top of that, more people come in to also face the same problems.
Migrants believe they had been misled to thinking that they could be granted asylum immediately. As perhaps receive a work permit. As on the other hand, other acknowledged that high numbers of immigrants overwhelming the city has likely depleted and reduced the resources for them.
