Disney has encouraged ABC News to align under Debra O’Connell. Another major media company is merging its news division with its local stations in hopes of wringing new profits which are currently being hurt by the rise of streaming video.
Who is Debra?
Debra is an excellent executive. She is a longtime executive for Disney and has broad business acumen and deep operational experience. She is an excellent and active employee at her work, she is also a mentor.

Debra O’Connell’s Promotion
Kimberly Godwin, president of ABC News, has sacked longtime executives and assembled a new senior staff at ABC News. This includes anchors Robin Robert and George Stephanopoulos. Additionally, ABC News has signed new production arrangements. They did this to create programming for Hulu and Disney+.
They will place the veteran executive Debra O’Connell at a new division that withholds ABC News and its local station operations. ABC News President Kim Godwin and Station President Chad Matthews will be reporting information and work for her.
The structure is similar to one Paramount Global put in place last year when it folded CBS News, local CBS stations, and syndication. This was all under a single executive, Wendy McMahon.
Wendy McMahon is the president of CBS News and Stations, the division of CBS that manages CBS News and its owned-and-operated television stations.
Disney Entertainment’s co-chairman, Dana Walden, will report to O’Connell, while Godwin has renewed her contract, despite a new management structure between her and top executives.

IRTS is a well respected organization focusing on mentorship, access, education, and diversity. She serves on the TVB, Broadway Association boards, and the advisory boards for the Ryan Seacrest Foundation and League Women Voters of New York City.
She encourages ABC News group to include local stations and business operations for its linear networks. This including FX Networks, Nat Geo, Disney Channels, and Freeform. Previously, O’Connell served as the president and general manager of WABC in New York.
The Lay Off
Under Godwin’s leadership, several veteran executives have been laid off and a new senior team has been formed. ABC News has secured new production deals with anchors Robin Robert and George Stephanopoulos to produce content for streaming platforms like Hulu and Disney+, aiming to rebuild a talent bench.
