Georgia teen, Hannah Watters, shared a photo of her high school violating Covid-19 safety protocols. The photo featured North Paulding High School students in a crowded hallway without masks on. It went viral and forced the school to close for two days, according to a CNN report on Aug. 10, 2020.
Nine people tested positive for Covid-19. Still, Watters is receiving threats from her peers. She says people are also sending threats to her family and her friends. These threats range from, “I know where this girl lives” to “Hannah is going to have a rough day at school on Monday.”
Watters says that though she will not stop advocating for public safety, it is concerning to receive these messages. She believes her school would not have acted on the situation if she had not released the picture of students in the hallway. She feels her school used the students as guinea pigs.
Additionally, Watters says she understands her peers’ frustrations, however, in-person learning is not safe. As much as she wants to resume a normal life, at the moment, it is not safe to do. This is what drove Watters to share the picture of her Georgia high school. Considering the nine people who have already tested positive and the high infection rates in Georgia, Watters has a point.
Watters believes if the school does resume classes, Covid-19 will spread like a wildfire. Though she admits that some good did come out of the situation. Some of her peers, teachers, and their family members are getting tested for Covid-19. Still, Watters fears the school is sending students into a situation, they are not prepared for.
