Not The Best Host
Famous comedian Jo Koy has received massive criticism regarding his recent insensitive and sexist jokes. Essentially, Koy was hired to host the Golden Globes a few days before the ceremony took place. The ceremony took place in Beverly Hilton located in Los Angeles.
Hosting for such a massive event is already hard enough, and with only ten days to prepare it was bound to turn out horribly. Many of his jokes were rude and insensitive. But his most critized joke was about the movie, “Barbie.” The “Barbie Movie” is considered a feminist film, starring Margot Robbie, showing how women are constantly sexualized and being brought down by society. “‘Oppenheimer’ is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies,” is the joke he said about the movie.
Nonetheless, many people were infuriated by this since he is proving the point of the movie by sexualizing Barbie. Unfortunately ,this was not his only bad joke for the night. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL?” Jo Koy said. “At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.” His jokes made no one laugh. Instead, it made people uncomfortable and embarrassed. Eventually, he snitched on the writers saying that people only laughed at his jokes not the written ones. Stating that he was not the one to come up with certain jokes and was instead told to say them. “Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me, right. Slow down. I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at,” said Jo Koy.
His Response To The Backlash

Afterwards, the ceremony was viewed by many, and he received a ton of backlash, he stated that he agrees it was not his best night. He admits that hearing all the criticism and judging has been hard for him to handle.
“You know, I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt. I hit a little moment there where I was just like, hosting is just, it’s a tough gig. And, yes, I am a stand-up comic. With the hosting position, it’s a different style,” Jo Koy stated. Jo Koy has said that even though the judgment hit him hard, he still had a pleasant experience hosting for the Golden Globes.
“We just had 10 days to try and write something for this monologue. It was a crash course. And, you know, I feel bad but I gotta still say that I loved what I did,” said Koy. He has previously explained that he wanted to do this gig to make his Filipino family proud. Despite all the bad, he states there were some good things to say about the night. He mentioned how happy he was to have been able to be apart of the several wins the Asian American Community had that night.
Audience Not Convinced
Evidently, even though he states he was not the one to write the jokes, people are still upset at him. Many celebrities including Selena Gomez, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Greta Gerwig, and many more were not impressed. It seems that nothing he says will make people forgive or forget about his bad jokes.
Jo Koy getting defensive instead of properly apologizing does not help his case. However, women are disappointed but not surprised. Its nothing new that a man can manage to completely disregard the point of a movie that relates to women’s issues. Maybe next time people will watch the movies they are talking about before making a joke.
