This past Sunday, investigators finally announced the name of a New York pilot who died during a skydiving flight after her passengers jumped from the aircraft near Niagara Falls. Melanie Georger, who was 26 years old, was the young New York pilot. Georger was a former Raytheon system engineer, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in aerospace, aeronautical, and astronautical engineering from the University of Buffalo in 2020. She also obtained a certificate from the Georgia Institute of Technology in foundations of flight testing and evaluation. Moreover, Georger was also a certified flight instructor and a commercial pilot licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration for single and multi-engine aircraft.

Unfortunately, Georger died this past Saturday morning while serving as a pilot for Skydive the Falls in Youngstown, New York, after taking off with a group of skydivers. An unforeseen terrible series of circumstances unfolded causing the young New York pilot to die on board her single-engine Cessna when it crashed on the Niagara Scenic Parkway about 15 miles from Niagara Falls after releasing the group of skydivers. Fortunately, Georger was the only one on board and was on her way back to land when the collision occurred. However, this does not diminish the devastating reality of the situation surrounding her death. Furthermore, the cause of the plane’s malfunction is still under investigation.

Meters Away from A Greater Tragedy

In addition, authorities claim that the plane’s landing location during the incident was miraculous. If Georger had fallen closer to the West, the consequences could have been far worse. This is because, according to officials, after investigating the crash site, they looked to the west towards Fort Niagara and were surprised to see a soccer field nearby full of players. This indicates that because of where it landed, hundreds of people were saved that day. However, detectives noted that the case was still unfortunate because a precious life was lost.

‘Blessed to be Alive’

Additionally, as previously stated, the young New York pilot was releasing a group of skydivers just before the crash. Jeffrey Walker was one of the skydivers onboard only minutes before it crashed. Walker noted that this was his first-time skydiving, and he was assigned to ride with Georger. He described how the New York pilot’s confidence and support in the air reduced his fear before jumping. Words he will always thank Georger for because had he decided not jumped, he could have found himself in the same situation. Walker stated:

For some reason God left me on Earth and I’m just blessed to still be around.

Although Walker still characterized the entire event as eerie and unsettling, because of the fact that he was literally on the plane half-hour before it collied. The possibility and thought of the plane breaking down while he was on board, or potentially crashing with many more individuals scares him and leaves him with a lasting sense of what if.

Furthermore, the details surrounding the collision remain a mystery for everyone, including Walker. This is because he, like many others, is unable to comprehend what occurred in the brief 30 minutes since Walker last saw Georger. Moreover, the scenario is perplexing because there isn’t much of an explanation considering that the weather was ideal, with low and quiet breezes. Walker believes that the episode was a fluke, and something went very wrong that day.

Died “Doing What She Loved”

Overall, Georger the young New York pilot was a compassionate, caring, and empathetic person who was passionate about her work. Her sudden and untimely death will undoubtedly leave and imprint on all who loved and cared for her. Georger’s father, Paul Georger, is among those who have publicly expressed his anguish and heartbreak over the loss of his cherished daughter. One of Paul’s statements on social media after his daughters passing read,

My life is much darker today and will remain so for a long time. To my tweety pie, my girlie, my beloved and my heart, I’m already looking forward to the day that we reunite, and I will have a huge hole in my heart and a never-ending ache until then. Stars and butterflies, my love.

Regardless of whether the young New Yorker died doing what she loved, it is still a difficult death to accept. She was only 26 years old and was on the verge of fulfilling her ambition of flying for the airlines. Now, many people can only hope that the family is able to navigate through this tremendously terrible time in their lives and only remember Melanie’s greatest moments, because it is undoubtedly what she would have wanted.
