The Closure
Four Red Lobster locations in Western New York abruptly closed on Monday, leaving local fish enthusiasts stranded. Red Lobster is reportedly looking to sell its restaurants in an effort to avoid filing bankruptcy, according to CNBC.
The three facilities in Western New York are at McKinley Parkway in Blasdell, East Fairmount Avenue in Lakewood, Transit Road in Williamsville, and Maple Road in Amherst.
While some establishments are still operational, a few more have closed across the nation.
Finical Crisis
Additionally, the location at Erie, Pennsylvania’s Millcreek Mall is temporarily closed. On the restaurant’s website, more than 80 Red Lobster locations across at least 27 states were marked as “temporarily closed”. CNBC reports the chain had been considering filing for bankruptcy because sales have been slow and dealing with costly leases.
For years, this restaurant has continuously lost money. The company increased the size of its all-you-can-eat shrimp offer last year in an effort to increase foot traffic at its eateries. However, as demand outpaced the chain’s ability to meet it, customers’ appetites ate into profitability, resulting in losses.
The company blamed its unending shrimp campaign for its $11 million quarterly deficit last year. A recent article on CNN described the consequences. If WNYers can’t get enough cheddar bay biscuits, there are still places to get them in Rochester, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York.
Neal Sherman, CEO of TAGeX Brands, promoted a “Winner Takes All” liquidation sale of “fixtures, furniture and equipment” in a video posted Monday on LinkedIn that included a link for those who wished to bid.
Speculation about a potential bankruptcy surfaced this spring when Jonathan Tibus was appointed as the company’s new CEO. Tibus is well-known for restructuring business entities and serves as a managing partner at the advising company Alvarez & Marsal.
Financial
According to a CNBC story, the restaurant was looking for a buyer as recently as last month in an effort to keep the business out of bankruptcy. Thai Union, owner, increased their investment in the company in 2020 after making its initial investment in 2016. The business declared its intention to sell its minority interest in January. The pandemic, increased borrowing rates, and rising labor and material expenses, according to CEO Thiraphong Chansiri, have all contributed to its dismal financial results.

Thai Union stated in a statement that Red lost $19 million in the first nine months of last year. A request for comment on Tuesday was not immediately answered by Thai Union or Red Lobster. Four more sales ended on Monday, and as of Tuesday morning, 48 sites’ auctions remained open, TAGeX Brands emailed The Associated Press to report.
The first restaurant opened its doors in 1968 in Lakeland, Florida. The chain grew quickly in the ensuing decades. The restaurant currently boasts over 700 outlets across the globe.
