Throughout the last year there have been many detections of some type of unknown respiratory infection inside of dogs. Signs that your dog has this illness include:
- A cough that can last for weeks.
- Runny eyes.
- Or sneezing.
Unfortunately, some dogs have even died from this mysterious respiratory disease.
Researchers are hoping to find something that might put light onto this situation that has been effecting many different dog breeds. Examiners at New Hampshire’s Veterinary Diagnosis Laboratory and the Hubbard Center for Genome Studies reported 30 canine’s from the state that they found an antibody that is making these dogs ill.
Finding the cause
A sequence of inborn trials from a select 30 canines from the state of New Hampshire who had been infected with this disease last year, along with an additional 40 from Rhode Island and Massachusetts who got infected this year, gave the base line the disease is respiratory.
Reports in Maine, where Eastern Maine Vets had treated canines going through some severe respiratory indicators have added to the data already collected. Subsequently, researchers announced that they have discovered a previously undisclosed germ.
New Cause of Disease
They said the germ “is new as a potential cause of disease, but it is likely to be — or to have evolved from — a component of the dog microbiome.” Dogs are similar to humans have many types of non-toxic germs and other microorganisms alive both inside and outside of the figure.
After initial sequencing showed there were no known fungal, viral, or bacterial pathogens, stated Dr. David Needle, pathology section chief at the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire. Furthermore, “time consuming and dogged work by graduate student Lawrence Gordon showed that 21 of the initial 30 samples from New Hampshire had some genetic material from one atypical bacterial species,” Needle added. The UNH team is starting to share its results before publishing a research article in hopes of combating this mysterious illness.
Striking the Nation
Scientists are unaware if it is the same disease that is making dogs across the nation ill. One thing vets know for sure is that this germ is something they do not recognize. New Hampshire is one of the many states that have reported occurrences of the respiratory infection in dogs.
Due to there being no testing yet for the illness and because so many of the indicting signs to other respiratory infections, such as “Canine Influenza and Bordetella (kennel cough),” it is hard to know the exact number of dogs that have been affected.
If your dog is having these symptoms please take the to be seen as soon as possible.
