 Stabbing Rampage in Rockford, Illinois

A 22-year-old man went on a stabbing spree around a neighborhood in Rockford where he grew up in. He committed one of the worst massacres that the area could have experienced. This devastating atrocity occurred, on Wednesday afternoon, March 27, 2024. The 22-year-old man has been identified as Christian Soto. He is now responsible for 13 charges in total. The charges that Soto is now facing are the following:

  • Four counts of murder.
  • Seven counts of attempted murder.
  • Two counts of home invasion with a dangerous weapon.

Now, this man is facing multiple charges including murder in Rockford, because he unfairly and for no reason took the lives of people who were close to him. Additionally, even the lives of people who he didn’t have a connection to. Fortunately, police arrested him 20 minutes after he started with this unimaginable rampage, before he proceeded further with this massacre and hurt others. However, it was too late for the victims, he was taken into custody as the police department says he was stabbing his last victims. Not to mention, he did not just commit murder, but he also injured seven more victims. Therefore, this Rockford man is now facing multiple charges that include murder.

About the Victims

Like mentioned before, Soto took the lives of two very close people to him and also the lives of two people that he really had no previous connections to. With a saddened heart, Rockford Mayor, Tom McNamara gave his condolences and identified the victims of this violent crime, they are the following:

  • 23-year-old Jacob Schupbach.
  • 63-year-old Ramona Schupbach.
  • 15-year-old Jenna Newcomb.
  • 49-year-old Jay Larson.

Furthermore, Jacob was Soto’s best friend since childhood, and Soto stabbed him and Jacob’s mother, Ramona, to death. Jenna was a 15-year-old girl who was just enjoying her spring break watching movies in her basement with her sister and her friend. She gave her life protecting her friend and sister. Her sister and her friend also endured physical and psychological trauma after this experience.

McNamara, said, “Jenna’s mom wants the community to know that Jenna died saving her sister and her friend, and protecting them from further harm.” Last but certainly not least, Jay Larson was a 25-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service, he was also very loved by the community, and unfortunately, he was taken from his family in this tragic and brutal event. Also, according to officials, one of the seven survivors of the attack remained in critical condition on Thursday, with four others in serious condition.

Timeline of the Violent Attacks

Hanley the prosecutor, provided details of the deadly attacks and how they unfolded. This attack initiated at the Schupbach’s home in the 2300 block of Holmes Street around 1:15 p.m. As mentioned, Soto was under the influence of drugs, here he started attacking his friend, Jacob, and Jacob’s mom, Ramona. Witnesses saw Soto chasing Jacob across the street as he was hitting him and stabbing him. Jacob was still conscious, and he was laying on the driveway where Soto ran over him. Jacob managed to run into the house. Unfortunately, Soto was then seen leaving the house after he had already murdered Jacob and Ramona.

Then Soto saw Larson in the 2200 block of Winnetka Drive, and he started punching him. Soto then returned to his truck and grabbed an orange-handled knife and then proceeded to stab Larson numerous times. He then ran over him with his black Chevrolet truck. Not to mention, Soto stated that he did recognized Larson, as the mailman. Witnesses had already called police at this point. After Soto’s fatal attack towards Larson he left the area on foot.

He then entered the home in the 4800 block of Cleveland Avenue. Here he attacked three residents with a knife. Fortunately, they survived this attack but were seriously injured. Soto continued his attack breaking into the home on Cleveland Avenue where Newcomb, the 15-year-old is brutally attacked to death, with a baseball bat.

Her sister and friend were also injured in this incident. He then broke the widow in a home in the 4600 block of Florence Street and began attacking a woman with a knife which fortunately managed to escape after a man in a gray Jeep helped her out. Fortunately, these two residents survived but were also seriously injured.

Finally Detained

At around 1:35 p.m. when Soto committed all the previous mentioned details is when Soto was finally arrested by the Rockford police officers. He finally dropped the knife at the women’s feet. She was the last woman he attacked; she was then intubated at the hospital. Moreover, Soto’s case is very complex because police has stated that they do not know why exactly what his motive was. However, when he was detained, he waived his Miranda rights. Soto immediately expressed that he was “high” after smoking marijuana with his friend Jacob.

He also mentioned that he thinks that the drug that he consumed was “laced” with a strong narcotic that made him very unsettled. He said that essentially this fueled his to commit the stabbing spree. It was also found that he did not just used knives as a weapon. He also used baseball bats and even a vehicle as weapons. According to Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley said, “Soto used a knife from the Schupbach’s kitchen.” With a knife in his own friend’s house is how he started with this massacre. Which is why now this man is facing multiple charges including murder in Rockford.

Heartbroken Community

This horrific incident has impacted and left heartbroken the entire Rockford community and the victim’s loved ones. The victims definitely left a print, and they will always be remembered and honored.

President Biden expressed the following regarding the crime, “Jill Biden and I were horrified to learn of the brutal attack carried out in Rockford last night, which took the lives of four people, including one fifteen-year-old, seven others were tragically wounded as a result of this senseless violence. We are praying for the families of those who lost loved ones, and hoping that all those injured make a full recovery.”

Biden also said, “…grateful for the heroic actions of local law enforcement, who confronted the suspect and prevented the loss of more innocent life.” This is going to be a very difficult moment for loved ones and the community to endure. Several vigils and counseling services are planned for the following days to support those affected by the attacks. Also, emotional support services will be available at Flinn Middle School at 2525 Ohio Parkway., from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Rosencrance will have counselors available for adults and children impacted by the attacks.
