The House of Democrats legal counsel had asked the court to fast-track their attempt to subpoena President Trump’s financial record. However, the U.S Supreme Court rejected this plea because its demands must be connected to a legitimate legislative purpose. The ruling sent the case back to the lower courts, where the subpoenas are likely to be narrowed. Supreme Court decisions do not take effect legally until 25 days after the rulings are issued.
The Three House Committees stated that their investigations “are ongoing,” and “remain urgent,” and that these investigations are being “impeded by the lack of finality in these litigations, which were initiated in April 2019.” Unfortunately, the court didn’t just receive a plea from The Committees but from Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, who was seeking Trump’s Business records. The court accepted his plea. Though the court has not yet released the reason for why they accepted it; it is likely the court was persuaded by Vance’s argument.
Trump’s lawyers responded that they will continue to fight the subpoena and will submit their rejection by July 27th, 2020. The final court documents will be due by August 14th. The Lawyers also stated that the President intends to take advantage of avenues available to him and claim the Subpoenas are too broad.
