Elon Musk signed an open letter on Tuesday calling for a six-month pause in the development of artificial technology tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a chatbot that’s become incredibly popular since it was first made public in November. And even as Musk may additionally insist it’s all about ensuring the intelligence is secure, there’s probably a far less complicated explanation: Musk is not involved in OpenAI and is pissed off the doesn’t have his personal model of ChatGPT yet.
But the story behind Musk’s departure from OpenAI is an interesting one and seems like a much more logical explanation for why the billionaire CEO of several high-tech companies wants to hamper development at OpenAI.
Open Letter
In an open letter from the Future of Existence Institute, signed by Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and 2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang.
“Contemporary AI systems are now becoming human-competitive at general tasks, and we must ask ourselves: Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth?” the letter read. The letter added, “Such decisions must not be delegated to unelected tech leaders.”
“If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium,” it added.
Risk To The World

In the Future of Life Institute letter, technology leaders and academics said AI systems with human-competitive intelligence poses “profound risks to society and humanity” The tech is trained on huge amounts of data from the internet, and has been used to create everything from poetry in the style of William Shakespeare to drafting legal opinions on court cases.
AI ethicists have also raised concerns about potential abuses of the technology, such as plagiarism and misinformation. Musk has previously said he thinks AI represents one of the “biggest risks” to civilization.
Necessary Needs
Elon Musk’s concern isn’t the development of AI technology specifically. The real issue is that the development is happening too fast. With technology operating, it could be challenging for the future of our community.
Elon Musk and a group of artificial intelligence experts are calling for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI’s. Before the tech is further advanced and caused the human to stop functioning as supposed to. For example, if AI technology becomes more advanced, our working services will be decreased. People will become less social and lack communication since everything will be through a computer system.
Importance
“AI stresses me out,” Musk said earlier this month. Musk, who has expressed frustration over regulators critical of efforts to regulate the autopilot system, has sought a regulatory authority to ensure that the development of the technology of AI serves the public interest.
If one human mind can get so worried about an issue for the community, it must be important. This is the future of our children. In order to succeed, the environment needs to be positive and trouble-free. With the solution of a six-month delay.
Where it all began
OpenAI was co-founded by Sam Altman. Which had a disagreement with Musk in 2018 when he decided he was no longer happy with OpenAI’s progress. Several large tech companies had been working on artificial intelligence tools without many people knowing for years. With Google making significant headway in the late 2010s.
Altman and the board rejected the idea that Musk, already head of Tesla, The Boring Company, and SpaceX, would have control of yet another company. Musk walked away from the company. After he left, he took his money with him. This compelled OpenAI to emerge as a non-public organization if you want to successfully boost funds.
It wasn’t clear that OpenAI could be one of these huge achievements after Musk left. in the end, the troubles between OpenAI technology being advanced and society remains there.
