The man best known for his role in HBO’s “The Wire,” Michael K. Williams, has passed away at the age of 54. According to New York City law enforcement, the actor was found dead in his apartment on September 6, 2021.
Officials added that they found drug paraphernalia near Williams’s body. The Emmy nominated actor’s longtime representative, Marianna Shafran, confirmed his death. Shafran stated that his family asks the public “for your privacy while grieving this unsurmountable loss.”
He was born on Nov. 22, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 22, Williams began his career professionally dancing. He appeared on numerous music videos and was a background dancer for Madonna and George Michael’s concert tours.
From there he performed in several productions of the prestigious National Black Theatre Company, the Theater for a New Generation, and the La MaMA Experimental Theatre. On his 25th birthday, he was involved in a bar fight. The assailants sliced him with razor blades causing him to have a large facial scar.
His first major acting role came after Tupac Shakur discovered him and cast him in the 1996 movie “Bullet.” In 2002, he took on the role of Omar Little in “The Wire” — gaining him huge fandom.
Edward Norton was a fan of the HBO show and wrote a cameo for Williams in the 2008 movie “The Incredible Hulk.”
He developed an addiction to cocaine and a habit of smoking marijuana after suffering an identity crisis in 2004 — Williams believed he was Omar Little.
The actor spoke about his struggles with addiction to The New York Times in 2017.
Addiction doesn’t go away. It’s an everyday struggle for me, but I’m fighting.
Many of his friends, co-workers, and fans took to social media after news of his death broke. Pee-wee Herman tweeted, “I just saw some extremely sad, heartbreaking news. My friend and supremely talented actor Michael K. Williams has died. We met on a film in 2008 and became casual pals. I was excited to meet him having greatly admired his incredible, insightful work in ‘The Wire’.”
Edward Norton tweeted that he felt like he was “punched in [the] gut” when he heard about his death.
Soul anguished. Getting to work with him was one of the greatest privileges I’ve had in my career. My admiration for his talent was boundless, like so many. If he was in a scene he was the best thing about it. Period.
Shanita Hubbard stated all of the posts on Twitter seemed to be about the late actor. She added, “You can feel legitimate loss behind every post/pic/story about him. These aren’t just the polite “thoughts and prayers” posts. There is a real sense of sadness. This says a lot about who he was.”
May his family and friends find peace and answers. Hopefully, he rests in peace.
