The United States recently faced a relentless attack of tornado outbreaks that caused widespread chaos and destruction across multiple states. The risk of these twisters still persisted on Thursday May 9, following a series of lethal storms that have swept through the Midwest and South in recent days. By Thursday afternoon, reports show that at least 17 twisters had been documented within the prior 24 hours across seven states. Since Monday May 6, nearly 100 tornadoes have been either reported or confirmed across 18 states.
An estimated over 30 million Americans, stretching from Texas to South Carolina, found themselves within the storm zone, and braced themselves for severe weather on that Thursday night and early Friday. Although the threat of tornadoes has already slightly decreased in comparison to the extended multiday outbreak . Nevertheless, the storms that took place on Thursday still posed the risk of significant winds and large hail as their primary dangers. However, the possibility of a few tornadoes was not entirely ruled out.
Tornado Activity Intensifies in the United States
A persistent and unpredictable weather pattern has been sweeping across the United States. Resulting in twisters each day for the past two weeks. In addition to the extended severe weather outbreak of this week. Since April 25, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has recorded at least one tornado report per day. Additionally, there has been an even greater amount of reports of large hail and damaging winds in nearly each state.

According to the SPC, as of last Thursday, there have been 699 preliminary twister reports through out the US. This exceeds way over the the historical average of 549 twisters through May 9. In fact, only in the years 2007, 2008, 2011, and 2017 have there been more tornadoes reported by this point. AccuWeather had anticipated a season of severe weather in January when it released its annual U.S. spring forecast.
Why Does The United States Encounter More Tornadoes Than Any Other Country?
The United States encounters the most twisters globally, with over 1,000 reported annually since 1990. The primary reason for the Unites States’ high tornado count is due to its topography. Its topography consists of a substantial central core with a predominantly flat terrain.
The area is composed of the Great Plains and Mississippi River valley, covering about a third of the country. This expansive area of grasslands and croplands quickly warms up throughout most of the year, generating rising warm air currents. This area receives moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and from vegetation, particularly during hot days, and colder air from the Upper Great Plains and Canada. All in all, these factors contribute to the frequent occurrence of severe thunderstorms, several of which have the potential to produce twisters.
After a Series of Tornadoes and Storms Ravaged the Midwest, at Least Five People, Including a Baby, Have Tragically Lost Their Lives
Officials confirmed at least five fatalities, including that of a 4-month-old infant in Oklahoma. As a result from a severe storm that swept through the heartland on April 27. This storm created multiple twisters across four states, with two powerful twisters touching ground in Nebraska. Emergency authorities in Hughes County, Oklahoma, reported that the baby was among four people who lost their lives in storms striking Holdenville. Additionally, one person lost their life to storm-related injuries at a sports bar in Sulphur, which was hit by a twister. In Sulphur, at least 30 people sustained injuries, including 20 at the sports bar.
Governor J. Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma, confirmed at least four fatalities resulting from the storms in his state. One fatality was reported in Marietta, and two in Ada. Authorities declared a state of emergency in 12 Oklahoma counties. The National Weather Service in Norman, Oklahoma, announced preliminary determinations of “at least” EF3 tornadoes in Sulphur and Marietta. President Biden spoke with Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt offering the “full support of the federal government” following Saturday’s fatal twisters. Nebraska’s Governor Jim Pillen issued an emergency declaration for Douglas, Lancaster, and Washington Counties on Sunday night. Making them eligible to “receive assistance funding through the state for recovery.”
