Confirmed occurrences of tuberculosis coincide with the discovery of over 55 confirmed cases of measles in Chicago.

Cases Found

Tuberculosis cases were found in migrants’ shelters, following a recent outbreak of measles among migrants residing in the Windy City’s shelters. Several migrant facilities have identified a “small number” of the wasting disease cases, according to Chicago health officials. At “a few different shelters” in the city, the Chicago Department of Public Health documented TB cases.

Officials, however, did not reveal the precise number of confirmed cases. Neither did they reveal the locations of the shelters from which they originated. The city made the point that a large number of people in South and Central America had latent tuberculosis infections. Which do not generate a positive test result but do prevent the disease from spreading.

The health department is taking measures to contain these diseases. There are no confirmed instances of anyone contracting tuberculosis as a result of recent immigration.

In order to address the health concern, the agency reports that its medical teams are increasing contact tracking. An infectious bacterial disease mostly affecting the lungs is tuberculosis.

Central & South America

According to the health organization latent tuberculosis is asymptomatic and does not spread to other people. Latent tuberculosis affects 10% to 20% of people living in Central and South America. On the other hand, a positive TB test is the outcome.

The health department is taking measures to contain these diseases. Antibiotics can effectively treat tuberculosis, which is not highly contagious. It usually takes several hours or longer for people to stay in close proximity to one another for it to spread.

Tuberculosis

There are no confirmed instances of anyone contracting the wasting disease as a result of recent immigration. These incidents arise when the city is expanding its funding arrangement with the company providing medical assistance to migrants.

“TB is not a novel or rarely seen illness in Chicago, as the Chicago Department of Public Health typically expects to see between 100-150 cases of tuberculosis in Chicago residents in an average year,” the statement adds.

“We will continue to offer treatment to individuals as necessary and take the proper precautions to eliminate spread, but we do not consider this a matter presenting a substantial threat to the public.”

Raymond Lopez

Alderman Raymond Lopez of Chicago stated on “Fox and Friends” on Thursday morning that if immigrants had been forced to follow the same vaccination requirements as American citizens, the outbreak would have been avoided.

“This is a crisis we could have avoided, just like with the measles, if we had simply instituted the American standard of vaccines upon all those migrants being shipped to the city of Chicago,” Lopez said.

He also stated, “A large number of these people arrive with children, enroll their children in our schools, and waive all immunization requirements that our students must fulfill for the children of migrants seeking refuge,”

The wasting disease cases were found in shelters of migrants that is endangering individuals, families, and communities. According to the CDC website, the TB vaccine, also known as BCG, is frequently administered to newborns and young children in other nations where TB is prevalent but is not generally utilized in the United States. It doesn’t always keep people safe from contracting TB, according to the CDC.

9,764 migrants are staying in shelters in cities. Meanwhile, cases of tuberculosis are being discovered in shelters for migrants. Despite being aware of incidences of measles and the wasting disease that had been present in city-run shelters for months, a Chicago alderman claims he has tried to bring attention to the health concerns pertaining to migrants and that Mayor Brandon Johnson has chosen to ignore the situation.

Raymond Lopez stated to NewsNation on Thursday that the Johnson administration has made an effort to conceal the public health emergency that was developing in Chicago by “trying to cover this up from the jump. “According to Lopez, a representative for Chicago’s 15th Ward, “this is not new.” “We can no longer hide this; it has been going on for too long.”
