The nominations for the 2019 Grammys are in and with their arrival comes bad news for some of the artists that were thought to be front-runners.

According to USA Today, “considering the drama that could have potentially unfolded on the 2019 Grammys stage on Feb. 10, it is a shame. Beyoncé will not be able to avenge her album of the year loss to Adele in 2017 with a win as The Carters.

Taylor Swift and Kanye West will not be writing a new chapter in their rivalry with a face-off in the main categories. Ariana Grande only has two changes to win her first Grammy.

Beyond the celebrity storylines, there are several of the year’s best albums that did not receive the recognition they deserved.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z

Over the years, the Recording Academy has showered Beyoncé and Jay-Z with nominations for their solo efforts, but they did not seem to like “Everything Is Love,” which is the collaborative album the couple released together as The Carters did earlier in 2018. There are fans who are seeking retribution for Beyoncé’s “Lemonade,” loss of album of the year – or for Jay leaving the 2018 Grammys empty-handed despite having eight nominations, they will not find much solace in this year’s race with their album shut-out of the main categories, according to USA Today.

Taylor Swift

Beyond Beyoncé, one of the Grammys’ most significant snubs of the year is the lack of recognition for Taylor Swift, the two-time album of the year winner, who historically has had a strong showing at the awards. This is not the case for this year. Her underrated 2017 release of “Reputation” earned her one Grammy nomination for best pop vocal album. USA Today suggests the writing was on the wall for Swift when “Look What You Made Me Do,” the “Reputation” single that was eligible for last year’s Grammys, did not earn any nominations either. Regardless, the absence of “Reputation” and singles such as “Delicate” from the main categories is not what Grammy watchers would have expected.

Kanye West

Kanye West has never won a Grammy in one of the major categories. His wins were limited to the rap and R&B categories. That will not change this year. West has earned one nomination, which is the 69th of his career, in the best non-classical producer category, for “his work on his G.O.O.D Music label’s slate of releases from Pusha T, Nas, and Teyana Taylor, as well as his nominated best rap album.

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande spent 2018 releasing some of the best music of her career, according to USA Today, however, the Recording Academy did not like “Sweetener” enough to include it in any of the major categories. Grande’s new album only earned her two nominations, in the best pop vocal album category, and “God Is A Woman” was nominated for best pop solo performance. He only other mention in the nominations is for Pharrell Williams, who produced the majority of “Sweetener,” and his nod for best non-classical producer. Grande has never won a Grammy, and she may not start this year.

Chris Stapleton

Alongside Musgraves, Stapleton had the best chance of being nominated into one of the main categories. While “From A Room: Volume 2” releases earned him two nominations in the country categories, he did not break through to the category of album of the year.

Justin Timberlake

A third nomination for Stapleton comes from “Say Something,” his debut with Justin Timberlake, nominated for best pop duo/group performance. That is the only nomination for Timberlake and his “Man of the Woods” album this year.

The nominations for the 2019 Grammy Awards were released on Dec. 7, 2018, in Los Angeles. Multiple nominations went to Brandi Carlile, Drake, and Cardi B, and the soundtracks to “Black Panther” and “A Star Is Born.” The 61st Grammy Awards will air on Feb. 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
