Welcome to the Phalanx Family Services Pullout Section of the Chicago Leader!
Happy Black History Month! We hope you’ll come to our office to see how we’re celebrating this significant month. In addition you can learn about such unsung heroes of Black history including:
- Vicente Guerrero, the Afro-Mexican 2nd President of Mexico and leader of Mexico’s liberation from Spanish rule.
- Kizzmekia Corbett, the African-American Virologist & Immunologist — who is considered the lead innovator behind the COVID vaccine.
- William Leidesdorff — who was the Black-Dutch founding father of the city of San Francisco, California.
The stories of these and other luminaries will be on display for the public to see.
Phalanx Is Honored
In the spirit of the significant contributions of African Americans, I am truly honored that I will be one of this year’s recipients of the A. Phillip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum “Gentle Warrior Award.” The fundraising gala event will take place on Saturday, February 25 at the IBEW Local 134 Complex. All are invited to attend (please see the adjacent flyer for ticket information). Recognition such as this is a humbling reminder of the significant work that my staff and I contribute and carry out for the community and it inspires us to do even more.
Look out for exciting things next month as we will be presenting another annual “Spring Break Jam” in conjunction with the Far South Chicago Coalition (FSCC) and the Healthy Chicago Equity Zone (HCEZ). This year’s event promises to be as big or even bigger than last year with tons of fun activities for Far South youth during their spring break session. We will have free food, giveaways, games, raffles, resource exhibitors, COVID testing & vaccinations, and much, much more!
Urging Plea
We continue to urge everyone to get vaccinated and get boosted for COVID-19. The multitude of ways in which our communities disproportionately suffer from a myriad of preventable and/or treatable conditions and illnesses are all around us. Here, we have an opportunity to face a threat that affects us all, turn this around, and get the health of our communities and families moving in the right direction. At Phalanx Family Services, we are still offering $50 gift card incentives for first shots and boosters. Let’s all get vaccinated. After all, we have a black female innovator to thank for the fact that we have a vaccine to beat this virus in the first place.
