Arkansas Governor Approves Child Labor Bill

Child labor which means the exploitation of a child has recently become a problem. The state’s child labor laws loosened. This is a result of a law signed this week by Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The bill eliminates a requirement that the state verifies the age of children under 16 before companies can hire them.

What Does The Bill Of Do?

The law will do away with the Division of Labor’s permit application procedure for minors between the ages of 14 and 15. Children under 16 are prohibited from requesting permission from the Division of Labor to work under the Youth Hiring Act of 2023.

It won’t be a requirement to obtain an employment certificate, which formerly served to confirm their age. Neither to outline their job and work schedule nor include formal parental or guardian consent. On Tuesday, Sanders made the legislation official. Andrew Collins, a Democrat in the Arkansas House of Representatives, said the bill “increases the possibility that there will be abuses and violations of other child labor statutes. Because it removes the necessity for parental agreement for a kid to work.

The Labor Department revealed last month that it had discovered more than 3,800 kids working illegally for American businesses. According to the Labor Department, more than 100 kids, some as young as 13, were working risky overnight jobs cleaning slaughterhouses. They were working for Packers Sanitation Services Inc., one of the biggest food sanitation companies in the nation. The department claimed that several of them cleaned razor-sharp saws with caustic chemicals. Arkansas was the location of ten of the infractions.

The Exposure Children Have In These Working Areas

Also, there is a nationwide easing of child labor rules. A law enabling 14 and 15-year-olds to work until 9 p.m. every day of the year was passed in Ohio. In Minnesota, a measure was filed to permit 16 and 17-year-olds to work construction jobs.

The Department of Labor reports that illicit child labor has increased by 69% since 2018. The department revealed in February that it had discovered more than 100 minors working illegally for Packers Sanitation Services in Wisconsin and Arkansas.

The youth, who worked night-time shifts at 13 meat-processing facilities, were between the ages of 13 and 17. While cleaning tools used in the processing of beef, such as head splitters, back saws, and brisket saws, the children were exposed to dangerous chemicals.

According to a statement from Jessica Looman, administrator of the Wage and Hour Division, “Packers Sanitation Services plainly failed corporately. He failed [at] all levels in this case due to the chronic child labor violations that occurred throughout eight states. These kids shouldn’t have ever worked in a meat packing industry, and that’s only possible if employers don’t do their part to stop child labor abuses from happening in the first place.”

Other Important Information About This law

With the introduction of legislation in states like Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and New Hampshire all attempting to roll back child labor. To protect and allow businesses to drain more time and work out of America’s children. Sanders has loosened the restrictions on child labor.

Sanders presented her vision for what Republicans want to accomplish for America’s children during her speech in response to the State of the Union. When she wasn’t blathering on about “critical race theory,” left-wing “rituals,” and “woke fantasies,” or even simply herself. Republicans are trying to stop the practice of locking children in substandard schools and condemning them to a lifetime of poverty, she claimed, both here in Arkansas and across the country.

Republican Congressional leaders chose Sanders earlier this year to provide the party’s answer to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech. Sanders formerly worked as Donald Trump’s former president’s press secretary.
