On Monday, Lakeside Refrigerated Services released a statement that it was recalling 120,872 pounds of ground beef products due to the possibility of E.coli contamination. The products being recalled are under the establishment number “EST. 46841.” It is located inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped from Swedesboro, New Jersey to stores across the nation.
The contamination was discovered during a routine inspection by the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). There have been no reports of anyone becoming ill with E.coli. People can become ill with E.coli two to eight days after consuming the contaminated products. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea that is often bloody. Sometimes illness can last longer or be more severe. It is most often detected in the stool. Most people recover in a week.
Rigorous rehydration and supportive care are recommended. E.coli is not treated with antibiotics. Sometimes, people contract a second infection called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). This is a type of kidney failure. This illness can occur in anyone but is most common in children under the age of 5, the elderly, and those who have compromised immune systems. Symptoms of HUS include less urine output, easily bruised, and pale-colored urine. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.
Anyone who has these beef products in their refrigerators should throw the contaminated products away or return them to the stores from which they were purchased. Do not consume these products. They may be contaminated with E.coli. The recalled products were manufactured between Feb. 1, and April 8, 2022.
