It has been nearly a decade since the shooting death of Puerto Rico boxer Héctor Camacho and finally, five suspects have been arrested. On Wednesday, they faced the judge and answered to murder charges.
These five men sat in a Ford, Mustang outside of a bar in November 2012 where the men shot down “Macho Comacho” and his friend.
Three of the suspects were serving in federal prisons for unrelated crimes. As part of “Operation Knockout,” they were flown in from Florida. A fourth suspect was arrested in the same city where Camacho was fatally shot. Police officers surrounded his home and he emerged in only a towel wrapped around his waist and surrendered. The fifth suspect is in a prison in Puerto Rico for an unrelated event. According to authorities, two other suspects were killed in 2013 and 2015.
Not long after the suspects were charged for the shooting death of Camacho, his mother entered Puerto Rico’s Department of just, raised her right fist, and shouted, “Justice! Justice has been done!” Her voice broke when she spoke.
At the age of 50, Camacho was shot in the face, declared braindead, and remained on life support for several days.
A close friend, Former Puerto Rico boxer Víctor Callejas, told the Associated Press he continues to mourn
Camacho and he is relieved suspects are now behind bars.
He was not the type of person who sought enemies. To the contrary, he was always looking to make people laugh one way or another. He was a unique character.
Police say the Puerto Rican fighter took one bullet to the face outside Azuquita, in the city of Bayamón while sitting in a vehicle with friend Adrián Mojica Moreno. Moreno had nine bags of cocaine in his pocket and a tenth bag open. He was also shot one time.
