Worried about emptying your pockets for a movie with your significant one? Well, set that calendar for Saturday, September 3. Throughout the Chicago area, movie theatres have created a new event for those movie fanatics by the name of “National Cinema Day.”

So why should this day be called “Movie Black Friday”? Three-dollar tickets and a five-dollar combo meal.

AMC Theaters, Regal Centers, and other major movie chains in Chicago will be able to watch their favorite movies, in showtime and format, at a cost of three dollars, and get some popcorn and a drink of five.

Cinema Foundation president, Jackie Brenneman, said after the record-breaking return to the theaters during the summer, they wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoers. “This is our version of a thank you to the moviegoers that made the summer happen, and offered an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet”

With Labor Day weekend known as a slow day for movie theaters, the success of National Movie Day could: 1) Bring audiences back to theaters on regular days since the pandemic, and 2) Have Cinema Day be a holiday for years to come.

The event’s first day will be the trial for Chicago, since many other counties have experimented with the day and come out successful, it’s safe to say the City of Chicago should not have any problem on an opening day.

Close to 40 theaters in the city will be participating in the deal. These include:

  • AMC Ford City 14
  • Classic Cinemas Lake Theatre
  • Classic Cinemas Elk Grove Theatre
  • Classic Cinemas York Theatre
  • Classic Cinemas Tivoli Theatre
  • AMC Crestwood 18
  • The Logan Theatre
