In Chicago, a drive-by shooting happened in the Austin neighborhood Friday night. A woman was in the crossfire and two people were driving while getting shot in the head.
When Did It Happen
Around 11:17 p.m., two people were driving southbound near the 200 block of South Cicero Avenue when a beige-colored SUV came up to them and started shooting at them.
Authorizes rushed a twenty-year-old man to Mount Sinai Hospital. He died a short time late due to his critical condition, according to police. The shots that hit him were in his thigh and armpit.
“Lost his life after serving his country for four years,” says the father of a slain Army veteran.
Other Victim
A 29-year-old woman also received a gunshot wound. The shots hit her in the head, back, and left arm. The woman went to a Chicago Hospital, Stroger, in critical condition.
What Happened Afterwards?
When the drive-by hit the man, the car he was in, collided with a parked car. Luckily, someone found him nearby. The shots hit him in his back. He was in critical condition and went to a hospital. He eventually died sometime later.
The case is still ongoing. Police seem to have no custody over the suspects.
Chicago Police Applications
Due to the officer killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, police departments all over the world struggled to maintain recruitment numbers. Police officers’ retirement started paving in a lot more.
Police departments were decreasing their recruitment process to only one day, according to experts.
Upwards of 630 members of the Chicago Police Department have decided to retire and received their pension this year, according to data from the Chicago Policemen’s Annuity and Benefit Fund. After about 560 left in 2020, that number was around 660 in 2021.
Chicago needs more officers to be on the lookout.
