After Trump claimed that he would deploy 175 federal troops to Chicago, the Chicago mayor decided to respond. The Chicago mayor, who is now notorious for publicly disagreeing with Trump said “federal troops will not be allowed in Chicago”. She said that she doesn’t want a repeat of Portland.
On the other hand, the Chicago mayor did say the city will be receiving additional resources for ATF, the FBI, and DEA. These resources, however, are not meant to cause any harm to residents but provide additional aid in managing crime. Lightfoot says in the event that chaos is spread, she will not hesitate to use all of her power to end unwarranted federal presence in Chicago.
Though, the mayor admitted that in order to do so, she will need residents to report any suspicious activity. She says that residents should call the mayors office, and their local aldermen if anything at all happens.
In addition to the Chicago mayors remarks, the Illinois Governor, J.B. Pritzker also spoke out. He backed Lightfoots stance against sending federal troops into the city. Pritzker stated that he believes this is all a ploy for Trump to get re-elected in November. Additionally, activist Niko Eastwind mentioned that Trump’s claims are nothing new, he is just acting on them publicly now.
