Representative Jess “Chuy” García revealed on Wednesday that he is thinking about running for mayor. Despite entering an already crowded race, a seasoned local lawmaker and community activist could pose a serious threat to Mayor Lori Lightfoot. When he last ran for mayor in 2015, he made then-Mayor Rahm Emanuel face a runoff.
García, who sits as the state’s 4th District Representative, said he’ll soon make a decision regarding a potential gubernatorial run.
At a news conference where he and other leaders declared who they are endorsing in various contests, García said that he doesn’t want to pressure himself. He wanted to be thoughtful and cognizant of every problem that Chicago is now dealing with. The difficulties facing public safety, the potential of new initiatives, and the field of public safety.
García’s strong name recognition and extensive political background might seriously endanger Lightfoot. He challenged Emanuel in 2015 and received Senator Bernie Sanders’ support. He won 34% of the vote in the first round, forcing a runoff, but fell short with 44.5% of the vote against Emanuel’s 55.5%.
In the interim, García has continued to represent Illinois’ 4th District at the federal level, and he claimed he is reluctant to step down from that position given recent unrest in the country.
García admitted that he was torn by his obligation to contribute to the preservation and defense of our republic and democracy, he also stated the threat to our democracy is still quite severe. For the past year or two, we have been barely hanging on. which made him therefore conflicted.

García claimed that serving as a lawmaker is exhilarating, the greatest honor, and he says he loves what he does.
García migrated to the US in 1965 after being born in Mexico, his family resided in Little Village, and García worked with labor organizer Rudy Lozano before he was killed. García He has long fought for the rights of Latino Americans and other progressive issues, including changes to the nation’s immigration laws.
Democrat García served as the 22nd Ward’s alderman from 1986 to 1993. Throughout his tenure on City Council, even at the conclusion of the historic Council Wars, he supported then-Mayor Harold Washington. García then served in the Illinois Senate from 1993 to 1999 before resigning as a result of a loss in an election.
From 2011 until 2018, García served on the Cook County Board of Commissioners. He was chosen in 2019 to serve as the Illinois 4th District’s representative in the House of Representatives, which includes sections of Chicago and its suburbs.
García was pursued to enter the 2019 mayoral campaign, but he ultimately decided against it and supported Lightfoot.
García will be one of many candidates seeking to unseat Lightfoot, who was originally elected in 2019 and is seeking reelection this year. Alds have already started the race. Ray Lopez, Roderick Sawyer, and Sophia King. State Representative Kam Buckner and former CPS CEO Paul Vallas have both entered the campaign for mayor. Willie Wilson, a philanthropist businessman, and Ja’Mal Green, a community leader, are both candidates.
The election is set to begin in February.
