A coup from the Wagner Group shocks the Kremlin as they appear on Moscow’s doorstep with its army in tow. On June 23, 2023, the Wagner Group shocks the world by launching a coup against the Russian government. Following a disagreement between the Russian Ministry of Defense and the leader of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner Group proceeded to shoot down several aircraft. This included several helicopters and one IL-22 command center plane.

In their rebellion, the Wagner Group captured Rostov-on-don and the Southern Military District. The extent of the coup brought the paramilitary group to Putin’s doorstep. They brought with them some of Putin’s army as well. Along the way, the Wagner Group faced little to no opposition and even saw some members of the Russian military join them. This has led people to believe that Putin’s leadership and authority are cracking. This coup from the Wagner Group shocked the Kremlin but nobody else.
Back in Ukraine
Ukraine is likely to continue moving forward in the aftermath, as some Russian forces were diverted to Moscow in the event of a possible invasion by the Wagner Group. The Ukrainian counteroffensive is still going slowly but surely. It was also found that the leader of the Russian Air Force, Sergei Surovikin, knew about the rebellion before it happened. This entire sequence of events has called into question the loyalty of anyone and everyone in the Russian Armed Forces. Prigozhin has since fled to nearby Belarus, likely to wait out any criminal charges. The Wagner Group, as a whole, however, has had all charges dropped and is going back to the front lines to continue fighting for Russia.
